Comments Thread For: Hunter: Canelo's Stamina Could Play Big Role With Floyd

Virgil Hunter, the trainer of Andre Ward, Amir Khan, Alfredo Angulo and several others, spoke to BoxingScene.com about the upcoming mega-match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) and Saul "Canelo' Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs), which takes place on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The biggest issue that immediately concerns Hunter is Canelo' stamina. In Canelo's last fight, against Austin Trout, Hunter saw that Canelo was losing steam in the late rounds. He also believes Canelo is fully aware of his stamina issue and properly paces himself by fighting in spurts. He doesn't reject the fact that Canelo is hard worker in the gym, and feels the Mexican star's physical dimensions are a contributing factor to the problem.

Before any of that, I question whether Canelo has the legs to compete.

trout just stood there and did'nt do anything. thats why he got caught.mayweather is no stationary target.if alvarez throws those wide over hand rights and leave himself open like he did against trout. that laser counter is coming right down the middle everytime. eventually alvarez will fall.

Good point. He hasn't seen a mover like Floyd since Miguel Vasquez, who he needed a rematch with to set the record straight on who was better. This version of Canelo is much heavier than the one that faced Vasquez. Canelo also has the experience gap and stamina issues to overcome. Floyd was smart to fight canelo now instead of waiting and letting canelo develop further by fighting guys like cotto and lara. those 2 fights would have prepared canelo to possibly have success against mayweather. right now he only has the KO threat which isn't likely.

Like the one Mosley almost dropped Floyd with? Really though, Canelo isn't slow and Trout is pretty mobile and has decent head movement, he just couldn't see the punches coming.

Canelo is going to pressure Floyd into the ropes and his combination punching will be a major factor. I agree with Hunter though, if Canelo gases out, he will eat potshots from Floyd. If Canelo traps Floyd and lands enough combinations early on (to the body), I can see Floyd in a pretty bad spot later on in the fight.

Canelo will be in serious trouble stamina/stylewise if Floyd comes in looking like he did against Guerrero. Canelo's a more legitimate opponent, but that kind of movement and speed will make Canelo look quite bad IMO. We'll see though, the kid isn't dumb. But his [lack of] stamina could be his undoing.

So basically everyone is already saying Canelo is going to be the aggressor and Mayweather is just going to run away? and Canelo can't be the one running away or dancing because that would be boring right? So it might be kind of nice that he fatigues and stands and fights

Floyd's not the busiest fighter, and I don't think he wants to shoot rights to Canelo's body like he does to a lot of his opponents.

I don't think staminas going to be a huge issue in this fight. Floyd doesn't pump out the jab like Trout, and he's not going to be super active, because Canelo can move his head, and has crisp, powerful counters.

The more I think about it, the better chance I give Canelo.
