Comments Thread For: Sulaiman To Canelo: You Must Give Up One of The Titles

Earlier today, the President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Jose Sulaiman, stayed firm on his demand for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez to drop one of his two junior middleweight titles. Canelo, who holds the WBC title at 154, captured the championship of the World Boxing Association (WBA) with a twelve round decision over Austin Trout on April 20th. On Tuesday morning Canelo traveled to Panama and met with WBA Vice President Gilberto Mendoza, who officially presented the Mexican superstar with his title belt. Sulaiman is going to give Canelo four to five days to make a decision.

Empty threats. No way they strip ginger and lose out on all those future sanctioning fee's.
Canelo should call their bluff and make them strip him.
Floyd hasn't defended in over a year. They made numerous exception for Chavez Jr. as well. They have no leverage in these situations.

I really wish fighters would all drop the WBC belt in protest. The other belts are bad but this is awful.

It's bad enough that boxing fans have to suffer through the common practice of having four beltholders at once, but that the WBC makes it nearly impossible to become undisputed champion in a division is a disgrace. The only way someone could become undisputed champ now if for them to win the WBO, IBF, and WBA belt and then, and only then, win the WBC belt. They'll be undisputed for all of five minutes. Disgusting.
