Options for Floyd Mayweather's Next Fight

OK, so he should be announcing his next opponent in the coming weeks. Below is my view of his options. I'm listing the most probable opponents first.

    1. Amir Khan - ESPN's #6 Junior Welterweight. Would be a good draw since he has a name. He just won, but not in impressive fashion so he's vulnerable. Smaller guy who should be easy work for Floyd. Fairly safe pick, he's probably available.

    2. Canelo Alvarez - ESPN's #1 Junior Middleweight. Don't care what anyone says, Canelo is a dangerous opponent for Mayweather. Would likely be the biggest of his last 5 fights not counting a rematch between them. The fight can be made but will Floyd take the risk?

    3. Devon Alexander - ESPN's #6 Welterweight. Horrible fight from a commercial standpoint. With the shakiness in the PPV buys after Guererro fight, there may be pressure for his next fight to be a bigger name.

    4. Erislandy Lara - ESPN's #4 Junior Middleweight. Fantastic boxer but a boring style. This would be a very interesting fight for boxing purists but it would be even worse commercially than Alexander.

Those are really the only options for Floyd around the September time frame in and around his weight class. It will boil down to his willingness to fight the most dangerous, yet biggest commercial option Canelo. Since Floyd's money is guaranteed, and assuming he isn't getting anything (or a smaller % on the back-end), where is his motivation to take tougher opponents?

he really only got 2 options that would make money...Canelo or Garcia...of course Khan would make a lot of money and Floyd would love this fight but until this he needs to do something...a win over Molina & Diaz just didnt do it...

the best would be Canelo in September...and the winners of Mathysse/Garcia & Khan/Alexander in 2014...

How 'bout guys like Mike Alvarado, Vanes Martirosyan, Shawn Porter, James Kirkland, Kell Brook, Marco Maidana?

Lopez Maidana is in 2.5 weeks, that's about when Floyd will make the decision. It'd make some sense: Maidana was on the original list of approved opponents. If Lopez beats him, that's at least as sellable as Khan, Alexander, Garcia, on Mex indep day.

Amir Khan isn't in the running. He's fighting again on December 7th and he can't even start training till like the end of the summer because of ramadan.

Devon Alexander, I don't see it. I really wouldn't like this, but it's a step above Khan right now I guess. Still, I doubt this happens and I hope it doesn't. Khan-Alexander should happen, than it puts the winner in a better spot to call out Mayweather. Even then, I would like to see another win against a decent Welterweight before fighting Floyd.

Lara, never going to happen. I don't even know why this would be a possibility, no one is going to watch Mayweather-Lara, I mean it might do 600K buys based on Floyd's name but I literally can't think of one person who would possibly know who Lara is.

Garcia or Matthysse, I wouldn't mind these so much, but they really should fight each other, than the winner should get Floyd.

It should be Canelo is September. He made himself legit when he beat Austin Trout.

I hate Rios but that is a fight I would want to see. Rios would sell that fight. Plus I would love to see Rios get tattooed all night long.

Amir doesnt deserve a shot. That is a good business decision and Im sure that is the onle Floyd will choose. He also knows Khan cant knock him out. Everyone wants to see Canelo. That fight is not going to happen because Floyd is not trying to get involved in a really tough fight this early in his Showtime contract.

No way. Josesito Lopez....get real, that'd be like Floyd fighting Paulie Malignaggi. Never going to happen. And Maidana.....no way. He was dominated by Devon last year, so Floyd would be better off fighting Alexander than Maidana.

I feel confident saying it'll be Canelo or Garcia. Hopefully Canelo.

maidana couldn't even beat kahn how's he supposed to beat floyd?

canelo next (he better fight him now cause the longer he leaves it the better canelo is going to get and the more floyd is going to slow down) alos with the **** numbers last time out he needs a big PPV to show he can still pull em in

winner of garcia/mathesse after that (if the fight eachother, if not at least one of them)

                kahn/alexander after that

and then close it out with pacman if pac can get a couple of wins it will still be a huge money fight

If Pauli Malignaggi gets past Broner (and that's a big "if") then I could see this fight making decent financial sense. Host the fight at MSG with all the Malignaggi fans and do it right

                    September 2013: Canelo

May 2014: Garcia-Lucas winner (that may leave enough time for the winner of that fight to also fight someone like Guerrero or Ortiz in December or January too, which would make it even better)

Fall 2014: Khan-Alexander winner vs Brook/Berto, who ever comes out of something like that

Spring 2015: Maybe someone like Keith Thurman, if he picks up some good wins between now and then.

Fall 2015: Manny Pacquiao will have fulfilled his last 4 fights with Arum by this point, and it would be Floyd's last fight. If Manny wins these next few fights between now and then, which I think he will, it's still an important and huge fight. Too much money to leave it out there.
