Tyson wasn't even a one-punch power guy, his coach D'Amato warned him of that early in his career and Tyson concurs that he was right.

After all, power is the last thing to go and unlike say Randall Bailey there was no sign of Tyson's power in his later bouts.

Speed was arguably Tyson's greatest asset.

tyson was absolutely a one punch power guy. he threw combinations, but any one of the shots could put you to sleep, or break your ribs.

I'm not sure if Bailey is a harder puncher at 140 than Matthysse..that's a hell of a statement..

Although til this day I remember an interview when Cotto said he felt his two front teeth shake loose when he got touched flush by Bailey..I'd have to admit at 140 Matthysse would put the hurt on Cotto similar to Torres and would probably finish him off..

I'm anxious to see Garcia-Matthysse to make a complete assessment as to how good a puncher Matthysse is since Garcia has a very good chin himself

So did Peterson. His best asset was that he was tough as nails, never quit, and always got up. No one's ready for that type of power.

As to the OP, no, he's not on Tyson's level of punching.

Powerful puncher sure...but I'd venture his KOs came primarily from combinations and speed. His coach's assessment.

"Day in and day out, as sure as Sunday follows Saturday," Tyson says. "I'd knock some guy out, and Cus would say: 'What'cha doing, man!?' I'd say: 'Cus, I knocked the guy out in eight seconds. World record, man. And he'd say: 'But you're no knockout artist. Joe Louis got to stand and watch people get counted to 10. No opponent of yours is going to be on his back when 10 comes. And he was right. My cleaner knockouts, Spinks, Botha – they all tried to get up on 10.
Cus has repeatedly told Mike that weights slow you down, that he needs more speed, because “Speed Kills!” Earlier in his career Cus trained Jose Torres to throw a 5 punch combination in two fifths of a second. There was only one man, besides Cus, able to time Jose’s punches and obviously proved to be true. Mike was just as fast, for a heavyweight, throwing a four-punch combo in under a second. This was part of the Peek-a-Boo style, speed.
When the speed went, the power was no longer as effective whereas I think the likes of Bailey retain that one-punch KO power to the end.

He's there scale wise with Tyson. He's just not as explosive or fast as Tyson.

You have to consider Tyson was a heavyweight. Almost every heavyweight has power, hyge power even but scale down to lower weights and even at 140 its rare to see a huge puncher like that. Laying guys out like heavyweights do.

You have a point. There are guys that probably hit as hard as Tyson, but don't have the speed and accuracy to deliver/land those shots. Not only that, but he can throw combinations. I agree that Tyson's speed was the main factor in his power, but still, his power was otherworldly. Lucas' power is too.

randall bailey was a harder puncher at 140 than lucas matthysse.

bailey's problem is that he sucks a bit, and he's a bit soft. matthysse is a beast with a skilled offense, and he fights that way.

Bailey may hit harder but Lucas's power is proven against genuine world class, granite chinned opposition. Bailey certainly hits very hard but lets be real the guy hasn't knocked out anybody worth a damn in his life.

This is true, heavyweight boxing used to be the most popular division because heavyweight boxing is associated with ko's. But pfp Lucas Mattysse is doing his thing in a division known for averaging close to 70 punches a round. Rumor is he's dropped every single fighter he's faced. Add the gifts Judah and Devon got, (1st time Devon's been dropped) as a pro. Keep in mind Devon has fought Ward and plenty other bigger dudes in the Ams. Lucas' power combine with his relatively solid skill does deserve a mention along great punchers.
