First of all, it wasn't only Peterson's choice to deviate from his plan. Lucas started to rough him up in the inside and by Peterson's own admission, he got carried away. Even so if he got carried away Lucas started to close the gap in the second round and get aggressive. Meaning that even if Peterson would have tried to continue to box he was eventually starting to get tagged. Don't forget that by the end of the first round when Peterson was boxing from the outside Lucas connected with a left and a right.
Secondly, Steve Smoger gave Peterson two chances to recover and in those two chances after giving Peterson the count he pushed Lucas back giving Peterson a little bit extra time. I have to add that in the second kd Peterson fell over trying to get up. Many referees would have stopped it right there, yet Smoger continued to count and once Peterson got up, took a good look at him, gave him two more seconds before pushing Lucas back again. Also, not only Smoger gave Peterson a break but did anyone notice that the bell between the second and the third round took a bit longer than usual after the rest had expired. In all Peterson was given big breaks to recover and couldn't withstand Lucas pressure.
Finally, Lucas has more than proofed that he is in the top 3 in 140. As of right now the only fighters I'd would rank above Lucas at 140 would be Juan Manuel Marquez or Pacquaio. Besides them, I don't see no other fighter with the tools to take him out or at least take a decision. And please do not mention Broner, it seems he wants no part in the 140 mix.
