It depends on how it's said......
The terms bum and can have been around forever in boxing, it's just part of the nomenclature of the sport...I don't immediately think all fans who follow boxing with a passion are always demeaning fighters when they refer to them as bums, it can be used as just as a comparative term. You hear fighters using the terms as well, but we understand that they all respect each other when the fight is on.
Maidana is a bum compared to Wlad, there I said it.
uhh, what I mean to say is that Marcos isn't as good as Wlad, and probably won't ever be. "Bum" just rolled off the toungue easier.
It doesn't mean I don't care about Marcos or want him to lose, or that he's not entertaining, or that I'm not thinking about his safety, family, health, etc. It's not really even an indictment on Maidana, who is obviously good and one of the top boxers in the world just by being on the level he is. Some sports just have their terms
So, I sometimes will give the benefit of the doubt to hardcore fans who throw around those terms because at some level I'm sure (hope) they realize there is no boxing without the sacrifice the fighters put themselves through.
The amount of flatout disrespect sometimes angers me but that might be more of an internet/anonymity culture thing than a boxing thing. I suspect the people casually disrespect people/fighters here do it elsewhere on the net.

Excellent post though.
