Comments Thread For: Mares-Agbeko Ref: I'm Sorry for Blown Low Blow Calls

Russell Mora says he is still bothered by the job he did 21 months ago as the referee for the first fight between Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko — and that he wants to apologize both boxers.

“That was the worst thing that I have ever done,” Mora told Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com. “There’s no reverse, and there’s no instant replay, there’s no taking it back.”

Here’s how I described the bout back in August 2011:

“Mares topped Agbeko via majority decision in a fight that was close and competitive but which ended with the controversy overshadowing the very good action.

This crooked ref's conscious is bothering him! He knew what he was doing! The money had already changed hands from Golden Boy.

If I was Agbeko I'd spit right in his face. If it was simply a case of him doing a bad job his apology would mean something, but his agenda was as blatant as the low blows themselves.

Your apology is 21 months late, Russell.

Apology doesn't take back the L on the guy's record. And I highly doubt it was a mistake, considering the favorable treatment Mares ALWAYS gets.

Too little too late. He should donate his salary for reffing that fight to Agbeko or a Ghanian charity of Agbeko's choosing.

He was dirty in that fight, he's only sorry that it pushed his career back and that he did a poor acting job.
