He ***** quit. I'd be embarressed and ashamed to quit from a broken hand, especially if I was way up in a world title fight. Exhaustion is actually a better excuse.

He didn't stop little Gavin Rees until the 5th.
Burns is a 2-weight world champ, not sure how that equates to being domestic level.Comment

Ricky Burns has the heart and the mindset of a champion.
Gonzalez has long arms and he's well-schooled, but sometimes that's not enough.
In round 7, Gonzalez ran into the stone wall of Ricky Burns determination to win, and couldn't get through it.Comment

Gonzalez was undefeated and a mandatory. Very good fighter, slick movement, great jab, wide variety of punches and a lot of power. Burns had too much heart for him to deal with after he sustained the injury. I would guess he might have continued against a lesser fighter but Burns is a different case.
After seeing this, the Broner fight would have been interesting to see. Gonzalez has many of the skills that Broner has, he even had his own less-refined version of the shoulder roll. There is a chance that fight could have gone a similar way with Broner outboxing Burns early, then Burns coming back later on (like how the Ponce De Leon fight played out).Comment

Fighters know! Broken hand or no broken hand you fight on! The only thing that was broken in there was Gonzalez's heart after round 7!!Comment

There was no case for a 10-8 round in round 7. Both men traded hard shots, both were hurt. Gonzalez probably got the better of it, but it was in no way the type of domination that would justify a 10-8 round.
Burns was poor tonight. To be fair though, it was a tough style match up for him. Burns was at home and eager to entertain a sold out arena against a decent technical boxer with long arms who fought off the back foot. |That resulted in him reaching with his punches most of the time. He showed impressive will and fitness (unlike Gonzalez) but he also showed that, skill-wise, he's closer to world level than he is elite.Comment

I'm surprised his trainer even let him quit. Many trainers would have pushed him back in the ring and told him to STFU and keep fighting.Comment
