Why are people calling Broner-Malignaggi a cherry pick?

He's fighting the weakest title holder at welterweight, and passing up much better fights in the process. That's the definition of cherry picking.

I got Paulie by UD or SD in the fight. It'll be close but too much of a step up for Broner at this stage. It's a good match up in my eyes and I'm looking forward to it. We can't forget Broner had a hell of a close fight Ponce De Leon and Paulie is a very good boxer in his own right. He has also improved since leaving McGirt but he didn't look impressive in his last fight - that's probably why Broner thinks it'll be easy work.

I'd honestly pick Vazuqez, Burns or Abril to beat Malignaggi at '47. I like Paulie, one of my favorite personality in the sport, great commentator as well, but it is what it is, the man doesn't have the same mobility, isn't physical, doesn't have much power and for the most part he's a one handed fighter. It's a cherry pick, a useless one at that since Broner isn't interested in making noise at 147. When the fight happens you'll soon see why it's a mismatch, Broner is simply all around better. I mean, Cano arguably beat Malignaggi, Broner is tons better than Cano.

******est **** I've ever heard. Why the **** would Mayweather be worried about fighting someone who couldn't figure out Ponce De Leon.

Broner is bigger than a lot of 140 pound fighters are first off and he was beating up on midgets at 130. Instead of fighting Vazquez or Abril, he short changed Burns who turned down the pennies and moves up to take on the perceived easiest titleholder at 147. Paulie, a guy notoriously known for his feather fists, also appears to be losing his mobility and looked less than impressive in his last outing.

Broner conveniently side stepped the entire 140 pound division which is known for it's power punchers. I think that's why people are calling it a cherry pick. The kid says he's the best from 135-154 in the world but he's only making the path of least resistance to try and grab the belt. He will then try to claim that he has already dominated 135 through 147 even though he never fought at 140 and fought the weakest champ possible at 147 (provided he even wins).

I would not be surprised if Malignaggi actually boxed him up to be honest. Broner won't be able to hide out for too long because guys like Maidana, Whoever loses in the 140 pound tourney is out and free to fight someone (Peterson, Garcia, Judah, Matthysse), Thurman, Berto, Ortiz, the Ghost....all these guys will come after him and then we'll see how much yapping the dude does - count on him to retire before those fights happen.

No he won't be. He is maybe 1 inch shorter than Paulie but his frame is a lot bigger, shoulders are wider, and he has a longer reach than Paulie does.

I think we can judge his intentions on taking this fight by waiting to see who and what weight division he decides to fight in next. If he stays at 147 and fights the best at that weight class, then this fight does not look as bad. Whatever you think of Paulie he has a belt and gaining that belt will give Broner leverage against the other big names at 147.

If however he only fights at 147 for one fight and goes back to 135 or makes people blow up in weight to fight him then this fight is nothing but a cherry pick.

Its hard to judge a fighters intentions just based on one fight, lets see where he goes from here before passing judgement.

Because people do not like him. Shane Mosley skipped from 135 to 147 to fight de la Hoya, but he also fought 1 or 2 times at the weight before the de la hoya fight happened.

He's a big lightweight, but it's still a two division jump. He could have fought a better opponent, yes. He could have also fought a worse opponent. I think it's the right choice of fighter given the situation.

If he doesn't fight a top 140-147 pounder after this fight (if he wins) then I think it's fair to say whatever you want about the guy.

Its because he skipped 140 where the real threats are at right now that he can make possible fights with. Why would you skip an entire division that just so happens to be the best division right now in boxing?

                      Guerrero
                      Malignaggi

Rank all of the current title holders/interim title holders from 135-147 in order by degree of difficulty.

If Malignaggi is towards the top, good fight. If not, its a cherry pick.

That's the easiest way to answer your question.

But like I've said before, I'm more interested in what he does after the Paulie fight.
