I'm not saying Dawson was 100%, of course he wasn't, but people aren't giving Ward enough credit. Dawson has always had a shaky chin too.
Ward gets credit for beating him, and maybe he would also beat him at 175, but the truth is that he was fighting a zombie.

Lets do a quick study in logic here because it might explain why the braying of idiots is upsetting to the OP: The correlations the OP is discussing involve implementing a strategy and the science behind it....Its similar to a biology student who first looks through a microscope and sees nothing until the teacher points out what she is looking at... When a fighter analyzes how a strategy is implimented suddenly a fighter can become aware of what is happening.
Certain truisms like "this guy is weight drained", "styles make fights", do not correlate to the de facto application of a strategy and its results.
The OP is talking specifically about using a body punch to set up a hook....there is no specific correlation to weight, styles etc....Dawson could not effectively see Ward setting up for that punch which (BTW) comes from a partial blind spot (another feather in Virgil/Ward's cap!)...what we in the Japanese Arts call "the Hidden Hand."
Barry in my opinion part of the genius of this unconventional approach is that while a straight punch is picked up fairly quickly on this side for the Southpaw, a Hook is not seen so easily...because it comes at an angle that is not peripheral enough to pick up visually until the last minute and...when stepping back to avoid the right hand cross body the person is distracted.
As usual nice vid. I meant to subscribe and will
