If Matthysse wins there is no issue. But if Peterson wins, according to the rules, yes. Garcia will have to fight Matthysse win or lose.

Unless he vacates and keeps the WBA belt and Garcia/Peterson would be a WBA/IBF unification with Lucas fighting for the vacant title. Possibly against Khan.

Peterson winning complicates things because it's a tournament. In a tournament the winners advance to fight each other. If he wins then he is supposed to be fighting the winner of Garcia-Judah...but stranger things have happened.

I don't understand why they are having a tournament if Matthysse gets to fight Garcia after a loss to Peterson. I understand that Matthysse is Garcia's mandatory but if he loses to Peterson how do you throw him in there with Garcia to get a title shot after a loss...in a tournament no less.
A 140 lb tourney with one of the fights being at WW

Any way you roll this - it sucks.

IMO, 'elite' fighters don't need to fight for belts. People know Martinez is the best MW in the world, Ward is the best SMW, Floyd, Donnaire, Wlad etc. These guys don't really need to fight for belts.

BUT... to become an elite fighter you got to to win some belts on the way up or beat some legit champions to get the recognition an elite fighter gets.

Matthysse and Peterson are not elite fighters. They still need belts to get big purses and be relevant. They should be fighting for a shot at Garcia and they should be putting whatever belts they have on the line.

This is just a cynical business move, to keep the gravy train a-flowing.

Garcia is the WBA champ too. If Peterson wins Garcia probably keeps the WBA title and drops the WBC belt so the tourney can continue.

Then it would be Peterson/Garcia for a WBA/IBF unification. And maybe Matthysse vs. Khan for a WBC vacant title.

Only care in that it is what determines fights. If someone loses they should lose the state of champion. That's what happens to all fighters, why should this be arbitrarily different?

This is clearly GB manufacturing conditions that will allow them to make the fights they want to.

But other than that? The actual integrity or historical importance of belts don't mean much.

Something has to be up. This makes no sense what so ever.

The bolded is correct. GBP is playing games with the alphabet organizations so the tourney can go on as planned.

The sanctioning bodies are the bad guys in this case. Not GBP.

What? Both are the bad guys. This didnt come by accident, it was most likely negotiated and organized by GBP. Just because sanctioning bodies will do corrupt crap, doesnt mean you have to take them up on it

How so? The tournament that we all want is happening. Who cares about what belts are on the line?

Put it this way. If Matthysse won the IBF title from Peterson and was forced to fight some bum on their mandatory challenger list (which you have to do in 9 months) which prevents a Garcia fight, would you be happier? All it would do is create a 25th reason why not to make the fight.
