It makes no sense. If Peterson wins, he will still have the IBF belt and will then be in line for Garcia, so he will still have to unify, no? GBP is playing around with belts and trying to make the most fake "champs" around. Guys who will still be world champs just because they didnt have their belt on the line fighting 1 pound above their class. If peterson wins, he will still be an IBF 140 champ. It doesnt get any worse then that

Not only that but you might get to make alot more big fights because guys wouldnt be scared to lose there belts.

You lose unifications but the main thing is that the guys fought eachother and thats what we all want. Thats what will carry the weight.
Having the risk of losing your title is also what the fans want. It means the lost is a real lost.

I was wondering the same thing, what if they both weight under 140? Is it still considered a WW fight?

Why won't they put their titles on the line? This stinks and makes the outcome meaningless. Why bother fighting if there is nothing to lose?

You could do that. If you had the right money and promoters, potentially 118lb guys could fight for a HW title. That is how corrupt boxing is as I understand, but some sanctions do have a certain weight limit a month before etc... so I could be wrong.

Ultimately, none of these guys will be allowed to unify anyway. I don't like it, but I don't care that much. As long as the winner gets Garcia. I understand why someone would be angry about this, but I care about belts far less than most people. They haven't held any prestige for anyone other than fighters for a long time.

Now, if Matthysse were to come out and say that he hates this, that he wants Peterson's belt, and that he doesn't like Golden Boy screwing him out of this chance, I'd change my tune. Fighters take belts much more seriously than fans. I'm assuming he agreed, though.
