The tension between HBO and Golden Boy began in late 2011, when former Golden Boy attorney Steven Espinoza replaced Ken Hershman as the Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports. Soon after Espinoza's hire, Golden Boy started doing a voluminous amount of business with Showtime. Hershman is now the current President of HBO Sports.

The turning point in the Golden Boy/HBO relationship took place in September 2012. Golden Boy was looking to do a major card on September 15th with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. HBO refused to give Golden Boy the date. The network would instead reserve the previously mentioned September date for a pay-per-view event, which was headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez and promoted by Golden Boy's main rival, Top Rank. Schafer funny.. LOL.. All Im gone say is look at What HBO has given over the last year.

Rios VS Alvarado I and II
    Martinez VS JCC Jr.
    Bradley VS Provodnikov
    Manny VS JMM

    All Classics….
    Showtime has given us
POOH… that K9 vs Smith was hot GARBAGE….

GBP just upset.. they thought since nobody knows Bradley or Rios like they do Floyd or Alvarez no one would watch. However ESPN has started covering boxing and shows these wars HBO is given us.. Showtime put on wars when Hershman was there. Remember the Marquez VS Vasquez Fights that was Hershman. HE left Showtime he didn’t get fired. HE left and came to HBO. BEcaue everyone knows HBO is the Big boy in the room. GBP just made a mistake let’s just face it.

I'm aware of that, in fact that's what I'll probably be doing on May 4th.

I will never get why HBO started that fued~

It is like a grocery store picking Coke over Pepsi and only selling that product while another chain that could sell both randomly deciding to not sell the one sold by the other other store.

HBO really could have taken advantage of the situation had they played their cards properly instead of playing 52 pickup with them~

I think HBO really took a lot of **** about their GBP output deal over the past few years and started to resent GBP for some of the fights they were basically forced to put on.

They wanted to make a statement that they can survive without GBP but took it too far.

It's kinda like how when a girl leaves a dude they can't just have an amicable split, go their own separate ways, and still interact without vitriol.

Like HBO with GBP a man will do everything in his power to ruin that *****es life before worrying about his own business.

You guys have got to be crazy if you think Golden Boy is going to be hurting by not working with HBO. They have all of the fighters and could potential build up showtime as a big time boxing network if the right fights are made and strategic marketing/planning is executed. They have Mayweather...... BAM! HBO is bigger than Showtime but Showtime still has a presence and with the right business strategies and approach, Golden Boy can make some huge noise for the network. Broner is on his way to being a star too (no matter how fake he is).
Golden Boy will not be hurting with the move they made.

I just think it is ****** for them to have been mad because HBO broadcast Martinez/Chavez instead of Lopez/Canelo. Arum had the date set first. That was lame on Golden Boy part. I don't like Bob Arum much and people blame him for a lot of what's good on which is warranted but Golden Boy dumbed out too. They tried to throw their muscles around too.

On a personal level I get it, but damn HBO is a publicly traded company I can understand wanting to get back at them a bit since HBO did help GBP a great deal but I don't see how this helps out HBO's business which should be their goal.

That is exactly how HBO is acting like though, I know boxing is just a small part of HBO which is a small part of Time Warner but such an ordeal does make me question the leadership of that company.

Golden Boy is dealing with Showtime because their former Lawyer is running the show now. They are totally juiced in over there. No offense but most of you guys have to take business 101. They can do big things with Showtime. No one lost.

HBO made a really dumb mistake by doing that, they still have a lot of muscle but now they limit their leverage with the promoters they working with. Now if HBO is really contacting fighters/managers there might be some legal repercussions there so they need to be careful.

Schaefer also didn't come out that great on this rant, he looks a little desperate when in fact they are in a great position right now.

Both sides don't look good, although I understand where Schaeffer is coming from because as a guy selling fights the more options available to him the better and if a guy is all about business (which is how Schaeffer presents himself) it would be hard to just accept HBO's edict.

It is a classic cutting off your nose to spite your face, sure it will hurt what you are looking to hurt but what exactly did they accomplish in the process.
