he will get a minimum of a year since its a felony and basically he has no defense and the DA will make a name for himself by prosecuting the **** out of him in court

That is ******ed advice. If your rich you can hire a good lawyer. Class E felony? That is a weak felony. He can get this dropped back down to a misdemeanor and serve probation for it. This case is ridiculous. All for not knowing the gun laws in NY. It is clear there was no criminal intent here.
