Mainly a combination of lower HGH, lower testosterone, more wear and tear, and less mental confidence due to age (you're not supposed to be good when you're old and IMO people let this mentally get to them). Convince yourself you're old, and you will be old even if you still have gas in the tank.

microscopic internal changes are more important than external ones that are hardly visible or seem of no consequence. Example - the heart may pump great into your 50s but its valves and the walls of the cardiovascular system once damaged, don't repair well and impair overall fitness increasingly.

Body is always picking up damage through life/training, and repairs are rarely 100% effective or are not 100% in the right places.

Just take these and one can box til he's 80. And the only reason you can't at 80 is because your prostate f**ks with you and you gotta piss after every 3 rounds or so.

What causes the loss of speed?
                curiously, how old are you?

I googled this concerning long-distance running the other day. I'm sure it's a bunch of factors, but the heart becoming less efficient over time at pumping oxygen into the muscles has to be a big factor.
