An inquisitive boxing fan has used social networking to confirm that the rumours about Channel 5 withdrawing from boxing have substance.
@hammerman1300 tweeted the verified account of Channel 5 this afternoon with the question 'is it true channel 5 are pulling the plug on its boxing shows.'
He then received the straightforward reply: 'Hi, there are no plans to show boxing at the moment. But we'll let you know if that changes.'
Steve Gowans, the broadcaster's head of factual entertainment and sport, is one of two senior executives said to be leaving Channel 5 imminently as part of a management restructure. Worryingly, Gowans' role will no longer exist after the restructure.
Channel 5 has been a recent key player in the British boxing TV market and the sport is once again left without a terrestrial outlet.
The broadcaster had been showcasing the talents of Tyson Fury, James DeGale, Kid Galahad and Chris Eubank Jr. Their withdrawal from boxing coverage must be a huge blow to Hennessy Sports, the promoter of the aforementioned fighters.
