Its his intangibles such as hreat and determination that made him great. He was a good combination puncher with good speed. Didn't havev a very good jab but had a decent right and a terrific left hook in my opinion. Great chin, but was easy to hit because he could be forced to brawl. That to me is a lack of versatility. He's great, he still won his biggest fights, but I just don't see him as skilled or versatile as others.
Who is the most skill full and versatile boxer ever in the heavyweight division?

Have you watched any Holyfield fights? The guys jab is very good. He can box from the outside, and had one of the best inside games of all time at HW.Its his intangibles such as hreat and determination that made him great. He was easy to hit, because of his willingness to stand toe to toe like a warrior. How is that a negative towards his skills??? If anything that's a positive towards his durability ratings.
Also had one of the best left hook to the body and hook to the head combo at HW.
The mere fact that he was a small HW fighting big HW's toe to toe, only adds to overall package.Last edited by Scarcaztic; 03-16-2013, 06:07 PM.Comment

What is it with people "have you watched his fight"? I was watching Holyfield since his Olympic days with Whitaker, Taylor, Biggs, Hill etc. His jab was not very good. It was decent, probably a 6 or 7 out of 10. And his willingness to go toe to toe adds to the package of excitement, not versatility.Have you watched any Holyfield fights? The guys jab is very good. You don't know **** about boxing. His jab was spectacular, and his willingness to go toe to toe in smart on his part, because of his inside game, and the fact that he knew he had the toughest chin at HW.What is it with people "have you watched his fight"? And why don't you answer the damn question. Who do you think is the most skilled HW?Comment

Ali was the best HW of all time IMO you don't have to be the most versatile to be the best. Ali wasn't a great inside fighter and never ever went to the body but his excellence in other areas makes him the best and of course his resume.
IMO it's either Lennox Lewis or Larry Holmes.Comment

Lol, any time you want to debate me on the techniques or history of boxing you just let me know.
Find me one trainer in the HISTORY of boxing that thinks it smarter to go toe to toe rather than get in and out and not get hit. I promise you cant find one and only a fool who has never fought before would think thats a smart way of fighting.and his willingness to go toe to toe in smart on his part, because of his inside game, and the fact that he knew he had the toughest chin at HW.
Why don't you go back and read the damn thread, I've already answered that question in my very first post. And why don't you answer the damn question. Who do you think is the most skilled HW?Comment

Larry Holmes is an excellent choice as well.Ali was the best HW of all time IMO you don't have to be the most versatile to be the best. Ali wasn't a great inside fighter and never ever went to the body but his excellence in other areas makes him the best and of course his resume.

Holyfield was a very dumb fighter. One of the least intelligent I've seen at that level. He would try to slug with bigger, stronger guys, and box with smaller guys. He could very easily be pulled into a brawl that didn't work in his favor. Club fighter Bert Cooper made him pay for that and so did the overrated Rid**** Bowe. Holyfield was really dumb in the ring. Maybe out of it too considering that he has no money.Comment
