Comments Thread For: Bernard Hopkins Well Aware of Karo Murat Obligation

Bernard Hopkins knew well in advance that a win on Saturday over Tavoris Cloud in Brooklyn would mean his phone would be ringing non-stop immediately thereafter.

Sure enough, the once-again light heavyweight titlist now has a full voicemail inbox to sift through while deciding his next step. The 48-year old wunderkind became the oldest fighter in boxing history to capture a major belt, breaking his own record set at age 46 following his May ’11 rematch with over Jean Pascal.

Talks have swirled prior to last weekend’s encounter of a potential showdown with unbeaten Welshman – and current alphabet titlist – Nathan Cleverly. With any title win also comes mandatory challenges, especially when the dethroned titlists – such as Cloud – endures massive gaps of inactivity, thus not already honoring such obligations.

“There [are] champions that [have] been callin[g] me out after my historic victory,” Hopkins recently said through his Twitter account. “I'm aware that I [have] a mandatory obligation under the IBF rules. My mandatory challenger (is) Karo Murat.”

Hopkins should take it. If he does so and wins he will break another record - oldest fighter to successfully defend a major title.

He could make a quick defense on the May5th undercard. He could be the replacement fight for Canelo/Trout. No big deal, just a quick defense against a B-challenger and a stay busy fight on a huge PPV.

      Then focus on Nathan Cleverly.

Hopkins shouldn't feel any obligation to anyone to do anything at this point. If he wants to defend, okay. If not, just as okay.

I kinda don't mind this fight, as it keeps X busy now that he has another belt. Thing is, in the only fight I've seen of Murat (against Cleverly), he just stood there doing an Arthur Abraham impression - high guard, standing bolt upright, letting the busy guy wail on him. Do we really want to see that?

Did Froch give his IBF title up? i was under the impression itll be on the line against Kessler's WBA. Checked the IBF website and they would agree with my thinking...

Co-sign..I don't get the point of giving him a mandatory at this point. Honestly this man should be allowed to pick and choose who and when he fights, I do believe he's more than earned that right.

murat earned his shot by getting a gift draw against campillo and then beating a 25-12 fighter. sauerland could even get eric crumble a title shot.
