First of all, Kelly Pavlik was The Ring MW champion, by beating Jermain Taylor, with previous wins over highly touted Edison Miranda, Zertuche, and Zuniga.

Secondly, Pavlik went up to 170 and he wanted to fight Joe Calzaghe, after Calzaghe rejected him, they went to Hopkins and Hopkins accepted it. Not without the public and trainers voicing their opinion about Hopkins being too old, not looking good against Calzaghe, and that Pavlik is going to injure him badly.

Golovkin is nowhere near the same hype boat Pavlik was in prior to his Hopkins fight. No where near. Pavlik was the MW king.

The ladies doth protest too much

I agree with your other point though, I'm not sure if there's much to be gained from the fight if anything. Interesting fight to think about but that's probably it.

The style clash alone is a mis match in Hopkins favor. The weight, size and strength is just icing on the cake.

This is a bad fight for Golovkin man.On every level.

i don't think it's out of the question that hopkins is outworked. he could also be hurt and then recover on the way to losing.

the most likely scenario is obviously that hopkins slows the tempo of the fight and lands the more effective punches. i still won't discount the possibility that a 48 year old man is going to get old overnight and get stopped.

if hopkins continues to fight at the top level he will eventually be stopped.

Lol remember every one saying Calzaghe is ducking Pavlik? Pavlik was willing to go up regardless, he just wanted to go up in weight. Hopkins wanted a Calzaghe rematch, Pavlik wanted Calzaghe, Calzaghe rejected them both to fight Roy Jones, Arum/Pavlik went to Hopkins, Hopkins accepted it. Everybody thought Hopkins was out of his mind, the posts were everything from Hopkins is gong to die in the ring, to Pavlik is going to retire him. It was crazy.

It's no where near like that for GG.

Hopkins has been getting old overnight the past 10 years. He old as ****. Period.

GGG hasn't shown me anything to say he that he could be competitive with any elite 175 pounder let alone a master of the ring like Hopkins.

Its not even a given that GGG carries any of his power to 175. Meh I cant really break this fight down too much because its a pretty ridiculous fight imo.

And one I cant see GGG having any success outside of everyone hoping Hopkins gets old. He is old and he looked every bit of 48 against Cloud. That Hopkins would still beat GGG imo.

Just hitting hard wont cut it especially when its not a given his power even carries to 175 or that even with his power that he would hit harder than guys like Cloud, Pascal and Pavlik. Then its against a guy thats very hard to really nail with a good power shot on top of all of that.

This poll in 2008, if it was Pavlik, it would have been like 100 to 8-10 in favor of Pavlik. That's how bad his hype was, but with good reason though.

Thats how the actual poll was. I think Tunney made the thread.

i wasn't on bscene then, but i can imagine that being the case.

hopkins was a 3 or 4 to one dog at the time of the fight. none of the writers or experts were picking him to win.

calzaghe would have always been favored over pavlik. pre and post hopkins it was understood that a lefty with that kind of hand and footspeed would give pavlik issues.

how do you think golovkin would do against pavlik and taylor on the night they fought?
