This is the best way to put it, and it's simply the truth.

Back when he was basically unknown in the UK, the few people that did know who he was didn't like him. Because he simply came off as an utter moron.

He'd turned pro at 25, done literally nothing of note and was talking as if he'd achieved more than he has today.

I remember when he came out and said "David Beckham isn't worthy of carrying my gym bag". This was before he'd even fought Pascal

This kept him in the dark for a long time.

But, he's earned his stripes and respect the hard way.

That's because he started late. Fighters who blow up late have a lot of catching up to do to become mainstream, and most of them never become mainstream.

        Some examples:

Antonio Tarver at 35 years old got his break out win against Roy Jones Jr. He got a bit of fame around the boxing world, even co-starring in a Rocky movie and working for Showtime as a commentator, but never went mainstream.

Bernard Hopkins at 35 years old got his career defining win against Trinidad, maybe experienced some low level mainstream fame, but never to the point where he could be the A-side of a PPV and sell 600k+. Hopkins despite fighting Oscar De La Hoya, who supposedly helped Mayweather and Pacquiao become who they are today in the PPV industry, didn't have the same "luck" as May and Pac did with his popularity.

Sergio Martinez at 34 years old had his first performance where he caught most boxing fans attention against Kermit Cintron, where he was robbed of a TKO win, and then a decision. Martinez is one of the most popular boxers in the boxing media, definitely top 10 right now, but never has been and never will be mainstream.

Carl Froch's breakthrough performance against a known fighter, Jermain Taylor, was at 32 years old, and then at 35 he arguably got his best win against a prime undefeated Lucian Bute.

So as you can see all of these have a lot in common. They started late, they got their best wins in their 30s, and they never really went mainstream. I expect Froch to never go mainstream, but he will be as popular as the 3 aforementioned fighters, especially if he beats Kessler fair and square.

Great post. Also as a chap said earlier, much of it came from Froch mouthing off to much when he just turned pro. It turned allot of people off him. Only since the Bute fight has he been really popular with a huge Arena fight at the O2 selling out in hours and starting to appear on more tv and magazines. I think recently he was voted the coolest man in Britain by Zoo magazine? Cant blame them as his wife is fit as ****!

Froch-Bute was everything Froch has worked for.

Selling out an Arena in Nottingham, having the entire Arena cheering him on, destroying a Top ranked, Top 15-20 P4P fighter.

I doubt he'll ever reach a high like that again. I'd imagine it's something he never imagined would actually happen.

And good for him, he deserves it.

And now he's headlining at the O2.
