He's a 5'10 lightweight with a long reach. What do you want him to do when his opponent closes the distance? How should he be fighting these shorter brawlers, volume punchers and sluggers? Should he be getting into meaningless exchanges and trying to show boxing fans that he has balls? GTFOH.

He either clinches or turns his opponents when they get close. He also defends himself very well with his elbows and shoulders. He does a great job at creating distance so he can follow through on his punches. He's got a sick jab which he doesn't use enough.

He's just a very smart, slick and crafty boxer that knows how to win. He gives anybody serious problems at 135.
I wont disagree with none of what you said, but dude makes fights that arent entertaining with his ugly ass style. A threat at 135? Definitely but somebody i'd pay to watch? Nah im good

The thing is - against Rees, Broner missed a lot of punches and was hitting air for the first few rounds and that was against a guy right in front of him! Broner would be teeing off on a lot of air against Abril. They will NOT let Broner fight Abril or Vasquez because those fights would create a buzz kill on the Broner hype machine which will not be allowed. Fast feet and precision punching are Broner's nemesis which is apparent based on the guys he has fought the last two years. Think about it, Perez, Rees, Vicente Martin Rodriguez, Litzau, DeMarco, even Ponce are ALL guys who are right there in front of him! That is not a coincidence! Only the Ponce fight backfired and he lost that fight. But the opponent choice is VERY obvious with those 6 guys! It sends a powerful message that with Broners walk down style that he does not have fast feet and they are compensating for that with opponent choice.

Before the Bogere fight, I thought people around here didn't think much of him. I know Richie's style is ugly, but most of the members here seemed to appreciate what he was doing last night. It probably had something to do, amongst other things, with the grit Abril had on display. Everyone loves that.

Abril is very skilled, and crafty as they come. He's got a solid chin and a will to win. Richie only has borderline respectable power, but he uses it very effectively for his style. He's a very tall lightweight. He's trouble for anyone, especially shorter fighters.

Someone mentioned that Abril's style will always lend itself to bad decisions/robberies. I have to agree. It's Richie's major shortcoming. But he showed last night that it doesn't have to be that way. After his point deduction, Abril got busy and started connecting with some urgency. The guy can fight.
This is pretty much the truth.

One thing I think helped to up his stock was his grit. He definitely had it tested last night, with all of the rough-housing and fouls. Everything seemed to be against him last night, including the ref. Despite that, he kept his cool and took over the fight.

abril is never going to make big money the way he fights if thats what you consider "stock"

I don't mind fighters like Bernard Hopkins clinching or trying to snoozefest fights because he wants to slow the pace and he's as old as the hills but this guy is damn boring and I can't condone this stuff.... I'm sure his stock went up with roman wrestling fans

Definitely. I didn't find it boring either, he was landing harder shots then Bogere and fought through dirty tactics and other adversity. After he got deducted a point he started firing that right hand and it became interesting. The dude is a superb boxer and I would love to see him vs Broner. I like seeing a ****er as much as anyone, but I appreciate a dude who can box like Abril did.

That's the thing. Abril is not and will never be a PPV fighter so you don't have to pay to see him. If you already pay for HBO or Showtime you're already paying for him and you will tune in to watch him. You did last night didn't you?

By stock I meant did he make some more fans. I think he did cause after the Rios fight there was a lot of b*cthing and complaining about him which there still is but not as bad. Some people are actually appreciating what he does. Im not sure how you condone Hopkins' style but not Abril's but to each his own. Hopkins not only clinches but also headbutts. Abril was simply clinching to keep himself safe from the headbutts.

I see a lot of people mentioning Broner's hand speed but I feel like Abril's hand speed is underrated too. He's obviously not as fast as Broner or Russell Jr or Gamboa but he got some pretty decent hand speed with good timing to go with it. I loved how he would hit Bogere with the straight right then once Bogere realized it he would come in ducking and Abril with tag him with the uppercut.
