I am glad a lot of posters in here are seeing what Roach really is about. No disrespect or hatred to the man but he is just so overrated as a trainer. He teaches one way, one strategy, no plan B. No infighting, no defense, no cutting off the ring, no traps, no counters, nada. Pure offense. He had a good run because he had naturally good fighters like Pac, Khan, Linares. I just don't know at this point why anyone would go to Roach to resurrect their careers, or even start their careers. Obviously Pac will stick with him no matter what and I get that, they have a special bond. Ortiz is making a dumb move, offense was never his problem to begin with. But then again, what else does he have to lose at this point so lol.

That sounds about right why ppl think all of a sudden Ortiz should try to develop himself with a defensive minded coach is really a worse decision he'll be stuck between aggresion and being responsible and will end up being neither

His best chance is to be an offensive powerhouse and win with that formula

There are literally some people in the thread calling Victor an idiot, questioning his intelligence and, in the same breath, saying he needs defense and to be setting traps, adding nuance, etc, etc....in other words thinking. Over thinking........while Ortiz gets lit up.

Throwing out the Mayweather fight, consider how close he was to winning, by KO, the fights he eventually crumbled in. I know, I know that this a tough argument to make, but like others have said he's not going to be some ATG but he has very good skills already...he's not always just some brazen brawler....all he needs is a slight nudge to get over the hump in some of these fights and finish the guy when they're ready to go.

George Foreman always used to say that if you have power and you hurt a guy and he's ready to go, but still surviving....you have to "start all over again" and work to find the right combination and hurt and hopefully finish the fight. I think this is what Ortiz is still capable of doing because he does have a good foundation to work with already.

When I look back at some of the in-between rounds of Ortiz's fights, Garcia is often quite panicked. He starts the negative thinking in Ortiz's mind, look at the round prior to the stoppage against Maidana...Garcia was ready to give up before Victor was. When trouble happens he goes to "don't do this, don't do that..." it's makes Vic hesitant. I know Ortiz does have a fragile temperament but those types of emotions are (sometimes) amplified and made worse by negative thinking of those around them, if you don't let them get to "that place" then they might surprise you with how much grit they do have.

I agree with this. Vic's too far along in his career to make leaps and bounds in his defense I think. Might as well just highlight what he already does well, and see if he can have another Berto type performance.
