Everyone has been calling for Rigondeaux or Mares. The Nishioka win is a good win, though. However, his other fights were against C or B- fighters. Going into all four of those fights, Donaire was favored to beat those opponents. So, he didn't really surprise anyone with his performances. Also, I feel as if he is being awarded for his stance on drug testing. What does that have to with being fighter of the year? This is a good thing, but fighter of the year should be based on their performance inside the ring and not for things they do outside of it. Why is it such a big deal all of a sudden, though? Sure, fighters got caught in the past couple of months. But, suddenly there is more clamor about drug testing and cheating since there has been in a very long time. I don't even think it got this bad when Pacquiao was being accused, since it seemed only Mayweather was talking about it. I think it's unfortunate that Marquez gets criticized badly for his performance against Pacquiao, since the same wasn't said about Pacquiao during his dominant victories over bigger fighters. Anyway, I think Marquez deserves the fighter of the year based on accomplishments in the ring. No accomplishment is bigger than his victory over Pacquiao. Donaire's collective efforts in four fights are not greater than Marquez knockout heard round the world. Marquez alone destroyed the Super Fight the world waited for and put a halt to one of the two Mega Stars of boxing. The Pacquiao train came to a halt because of Marquez alone. Maybe, people will appreciate what this knockout means once we see how 2013 plays out for both of these fighters. But, it seems intuitive tw=o award the fighter of the year to Marquez, given what he did to a top 5 P4P fighter and how he did it.
Marquez wins easily The K.O. of the Year & Upset of the Year Awards but RIGHTFULLY SO, NOT THE FIGHTER OF THE YEAR!!!

      Danny Garcia gets my vote.

Donaire has no significant wins this year. The Montiell and Arce KOs were impressive but they were vs smaller boxers. Its pat due time for Donaire to fight real comp.

This post sums up my thoughts exactly. Judging by the staff voting, I'm sure plenty of others agree with your take as well.

to say donaire had no significant wins is ridiculous. Nishioki was #1 ranbked 122 lb fighter who hadnt lost in 8 yrs. the ease with which Donaire dispatched him made people think it was an easy fight. Donaires wins over arce, Vazquez and mathebula are way better than 2 wins over Morales. Plus, Khan was coming off a loss in his last fight. Donaire's yr was way more impressive as all 4 of his wins were against legit top 10 contenders with one being over the consensus #1 (although Mares wouldve been a tougher challenge) if garcia took a tough fight for his 3rd fight, such as Mattyse or Maidana, then Id agree.
a more legit argument can be made for Marquez bc he had the biggest win of the yr. but, I dont think u can discount Marquez su****ious body change.
I actually think Ward should be considered top 5 in fighter of yr discussions as his win over Dawson was more impressive than any win all yr other than Marquez ko of Pac

Marquez deserved it hands down. Manny hasn't been KO'd in ages and the way he did it to one of the top dogs of the sport should have easily had him FOTY. Looks like Boxingscene trying to build Donaire up after Pacquiao's KO loss.

Donaire deserves it he beat really good fighters and made them look like bums. Plus he's the most active. He's the only one who's paved the way for real drug testing and it ain't smokescreen like what Floyd does (who himself by the way tested 3x for steroids).

Marquez does not deserve any consideration because he was losing that fight when he landed a perfect lucky punch. Plus we all know his body and strength was not natural.

Danny Garcia was impressive next to Donaire. He rose from one of those up and comers to world best in one year's time. He should be Mr. Significant.

On this I can understand Donaire getting the nod but your accusations on Floyd being dirty 3 times needs more people. I think I asked you on another thread but never got an answer regarding proof.

That sounds fair, Donaire had a tremendous year and wiped out the top guys. JMM or Mares would have been good mentions too. Let's not forget Carlos Abregu either....3-0 with 3 KO's in 2012, even stomped out Dulorme.

                  Jack Culcay had 4 fights in 2012, 4-0, 4 KO's.....

Knocking out Pacquiao is an achievement that far eclipses cleaning out 122 against fighters who won't fight back, regardless of how good they are supposed to be. Donaire had a good solid run this year but chances are he'll never do anything in his career that comes close to the accomplishment of Marquez this year.
Did Marquez allow himself to be tested 24/7/365? No...well then.

Did Marquez allow himself to tested 24/7/365? No...probably b/c of Memo. I give Floyd credit for initiating testing to be in boxing. But what Donaire is doing, took volutary testing in boxing into another level. That you have to give credit to. Plus he fought 4x in one year with top 10competition.
