He's been sick for his whole life, and some athletes have similar diseases and have been able to continue with their careers. The headline is very misleading, he didn't test positive for PEDS, he has a medical condition that makes it unsafe for him to fight.
Here's what it says on pubmed:
Thalassemia is a blood disorder passed down through families (inherited) in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia.
is that the end of his career then?
Take for example pro soccer player Lass Diarra who has sickle cell anemia (very similar to thalassemia) and has been able to play for top teams such as Real Madrid.Comment

Dumbest post of the month, cong****.
They need to call Agbeko ASAP! Agbeko is hungry enough to take the fight on such short notice.Comment

So this disease just popped up now a week before a big fight?I'm pretty sure he's being treated, otherwise he would be weak most of the time and wouldn't be able to fight, especially not as a pro boxer.
And no, thalassemia has absolutely nothing to do with PEDs, it's just a genetic disease, his parents most likely were carriers and he was unlucky to get the disease.
I am asking because I dont know.Comment

Ahh. Ok.He's been sick for his whole life, and some athletes have similar diseases and have been able to continue with their careers.
Take for example pro soccer player Lass Diarra who has sickle cell anemia (very similar to thalassemia) and has been able to play for top teams such as Real Madrid.
But he still passed physicals for earlier fights. Is that plausible?Comment

How come this hasn't been an issue in any of his other pre-fight physicals though? Does that mean his condition must have worsened since his last fight in September or is the blood testing in the U.S. more stringent?I'm pretty sure he's being treated, otherwise he would be weak most of the time and wouldn't be able to fight, especially not as a pro boxer.
