The overhand right is not used so much because its a telegraphed punch that leaves you off balance and its hard to follow up with anything.

A straight right will hit the target a lot faster than an overhand right will & the chances are if you throw an overhand right, your opponent will see it coming and take most of the sting off it ala Maidana vs Khan or they will plaster you with a counter left hook as you lean into it.


The overhand right has been used since before MMA was even thought of.

MMA fighters are terrible example I will tell you most boxers wont be hit by that punch and probably get countered and hurt only reason Manny was hit with it is because he is ****** and got frustrated by Marquez bodywork he thought Marquez was throwing another one

It is a powerful way to throw the right but a sharp left hook, a straighter right or even an uppercut are likely to beat it to the spot making it really risky.

It is like throwing a baseball although taking a step forward adds power but makes it even more telegraphed and dangerous to throw.

It is a punch you can throw out there a couple times or set up but relying on it will generally get a guy beat up and taken out.

It's a more powerfull more dedicated version of a straight right hand... with a sort of looping path... Punch starts further back/down compared with the straight right which is compact..

I'm curious because most boxers/boxing fans don't know what an overhand right is. I've been to many gyms and NOT 1 trains in doing overhand rights because the old school mentality that they are "haymakers" and wild and leave you open. YET they are not, as proven by MMA fighters such as Chuck Liddell, there are many examples proving MMA fighters used it to more effect before boxers. Now boxers are slowing picking up on it.

Martinez vs Williams, Pacquiao vs Hattton, Martinez vs Chavez, Marquez vs Pacquiao are all instances where overhands ended or nearly ended the match. I'm just wondering if anyone is aware of that punch because Jim Lampley who has been announcing matches for years tends to call it a "hook" or a "right hand" when it is OBVIOUS to a fighter who throws them that it is an OVERHAND the most powerful punch you can throw, which is why it's often a career ender when it connects.

Have you been watching boxing for a long time? It's not like these highlight ko dudes invented that punch. In boxing, you are taught to go straight to your target. I would prefer a nice hard straight right hand over a looping overhand right any day of the week. I am talking about shots that I've seen guys like Mayweather, or Donaire, or Chavez Sr. throw. Those overhand rights are often desperation shots since you leave yourself completely wide open. For example, look at Montiel-Donaire, where Montiel threw the overhand right and got a dent on the side of his face for his efforts. Therefore, is the overhand right a good shot? Yeah. But, you better make sure it lands, otherwise you are going to have a dent on the side of your face.

i know what an overhand right is and i never felt its an under appreciated punch, if anything its over apprciated. its certainly overused, a right hook, now thats an under used and under appreciated punch.

as for the mma comment i dont really know how to even adress that. chuck liddell threw literally the worst overhand right ever, fck an overhand it was the worst of any punch. you say fans and fighters consider it a wild punch that leaves you open than you namedrop the fighter who threw the single wildest overhand right ever and left himself wide open each and every time.

as for what an overhand is its what it sounds like, a punch looped over your opnents hand. a hook goes around the guard, a straight goes down the pipe and an overhand comes over the top. a straight can also land over the top if the oponent is holding his hand really low, its still a straight punch though.

when throwing an overhand you elevate the elbow a bit, the punch should come down on the oponent even if hes taller than you. the key is to keep it short, unlike liddell and most mixed martial artists. seriously man, when i explain to ppl how boxing really isnt a part of mma since they dont have any boxing skills. the way they wing their right hand over the top like bums is one of the first things i point out and liddell is a perfect example.
