They want the Cotto fight still because Golden Boy Prom. would make it seem like it's a great win for Alvarez. Now it would be a good win, but not great at this point. Cotto is clearly past his prime now, so Alvarez getting a win over him wouldn't mean anywhere as much as it could have even a year ago. I think it would still be a good fight, but at this point I think Alvarez would win.

So yeah go ahead and beat on a OLD Cotto that is fine, but he can't run and GBP can't protect him for ever, eventually he will have to fight Trout, Lara, Molina, Vanes and guys like that, until then I just cannot take him all that Serious and he is certainly not the #1 fighters at 154 especially when he haven't even fought any of them, he is just a man walking around with a WBC Title that was basically handed to him
Oh and by the way...I think Trout has a easier time with Canelo then he did with Cotto, Canelo does absolutely nothing that can give Trout problems...what he has some Power? OK? What Else?
For September 2012 he wanted Mayweather, Cotto, they both told him they need a vacation. Then Williams, Kirkland, Ortiz you know how that went down.
Don't get it twisted, i'm not Mexican so i'm not going to be overly biased towards Canelo. I like the guys style, composure, combination punching, power, and the way he mixes action with defense. I want to see him showcase these things against better opposition, and at 22 years old it gets no better than Miguel Cotto as your first real big challenge.
Sure bring up Cotto's two losses in a row, but I like how people want to say losses don't mean **** and that true boxing fans just want to see good fights, and that old school fighters lost and came back to fight other top guys. But when it's not part of their agenda, then fighters coming off of losses is a bad thing. It's not like this is Pac vs Margarito/Mosley where Margarito got completely destroyed and then had a 1 year layoff, and Mosley was shut out by Floyd and then had a draw with Sergio Mora. This is a Miguel Cotto coming off a very competitive loss. So he's lost two decisions, but it's not like he's getting massacred like he was in 147 against Margarito and Pacquiao.
Cotto actually seems stronger at 154 which is why I disagree with those saying he doesn't belong here. I mean they're talking about prime Cotto this, prime Cotto that...man, "prime" Cotto was getting badly stunned and wobbled by Ricardo Torres, DeMarcus Corley, Zab Judah, was destroyed by Margarito.

I would rather Trout get the shot he deserves at Canelo, but treating Cotto likes he's done after losing a tough fight is just why we don't get these kind of fights. It's not Canelo's fault fights with PWill, Kirkland,or Ortiz (finally some risky fights) fell through, but it's time for Canelo to have one and Cotto would just be a name for Canelo at this point..

If it makes every one feel better, how about Cotto gets a win over Bundrage or Molina, and then we have Canelo vs Cotto on September?
I mean I don't know who the hell Canelo will fight in May, probably Trout. Mayweather vs Guerrero seems like it's going to happen.

It's a damn shame how people are trying to discredit Trout's victory. Trout is everything you want in a champion. He goes on the road, fights guys in their hometown and delivers every time.
All he can do is keep making the best fights possible and keep winning. He needs to go the route of Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright.
I can understand why people wanted Trout to lose last night, because people wanted to see Canelo vs. Cotto in May. While the fight may still happen, it doesn't have the same meaning as it would have if Cotto had won.
Cotto's resume at 154 is garbage and he lost convincingly against his two toughest challenges at this weight class. WHEN Canelo batters and beats Cotto to a bloody pulp, it will be nothing more than a name of a faded fighter on his resume. Cotto is on his way to becoming the new Shane Mosley. But just like Mosley, the guy has paid his dues and is a warrior and deseves the last few paydays that await him.Last edited by -PBP-; 12-02-2012, 03:42 PM.

I hope I am wrong and he develops as a fighter and lives up to the HYPE, but as far as in the Ring...I just don't see anything "SPECIAL", nothing that separates him from Lara, Trout, K9, Vanes or Molina...besides him being better promoted and well protected
When I see Broner, Leo Santa Cruz, Mikey Garcia hell even Keith Thurman, young fighters who are on the rise, when I watch them I see the potential even against Weak Competition, with Canelo on the other hand that dude was struggling even with Weaker Competition...hell I thought he lost to Larry Mosley!
Oscar is marketing his LOOK, plus him being Mexican which means an instant Fanbase for him, Canelo is basically a PRIVILEGED BOXER right now, he really haven't earned anything, not a fan base, not a title, not anything, all of that was HANDED TO HIM!Last edited by sicko; 12-02-2012, 03:54 PM.

Cotto has paid his dues and deserves the opportunity to use the name and reputation that he built up in the sport of boxing to land a few more paydays before he ultimately retires.

shaefer ought to keep his mouth shut sometimes. stuff like this is just cannon fodder
cotto is coming off of two losses now. he's very obviously checked out of boxing mentally. i don't want to see this fight.
i'd like for cotto to retire, actually
the way he snubbed jim grey was embarrassing. he ought to be ashamed of that.
