Reid - can be considered a loss or draw quite easily
A close fight that I thought Calzaghe edged over a good domestic-level fighter.

Lacy - an example of how utter crap with a mean hook can win a title if well protected. Put another way - what decent fighter cant beat Lacy? None. Its a no value win, but it was a good performance on the night from Joe!
It was a shutout over the almost consensus favorite. Revisionism is sweet, although I concede that Lacy was never really that good. Jeff had stopped Reid and Pemberton, two decent wins.

Jones/Hopkins - way too old to last against a high volume superfit fighter, a guaranteed victory for Joe as long as he could last their early arsenal. Easily would be losses for Joe if he'd fought them in their primes, absolutely NO question.
We're discussing things that actually happened here. Don't start throwing around fictional results for fictional fights that never happened nor will ever happen.
Roy was a shell of his former self, and overall one of Calzaghe's lesser victories. Though a win over Hopkins, even at that stage, is a good achievement. The man went on to absolutely school Pavlik and become the oldest world champion in the history of boxing by decisioning Jean Pascal.

Calzaghe was hardly prime and fresh for those fights, either.

Bika - obvious willing and ability, but what kind of champion happily picks tv show fighters like him and Manfredo as credible opponents? Few do so, Calzaghe is one of the exceptions.
They were decent contenders. Calzaghe beat 'em. Nothing more to say, really.

Eubank - finished, unprepared and clearly wasnt interested in winning the title that he had already left behind years ago.
Maybe so, that was more a passing of the torch fight. It was for a vacant title that Calzaghe wanted, so he fought for it and was victorious.

That amounts to three losses and three faceless wins in the 'real world'. Bika perhaps is a good win. Hardly ATG material.
No, that amounts to three fictional losses you account for fights that never happened, and a close bout that many people thought Calzaghe won.

Weak argument, that, seeing as I already agreed in my original post that it wasn't a great resume.

I think JC tasted canvas against BH and RJJ cos he was in their backyard. When you are in someones backyard you become more urgent to press the action and under more pressure.

JC probably a little nervous that is all and got caught. Similar to Pac against JMM, but only Pac was just eyeing a ko, and thats not the way to go sometimes.

thank you! i have no problem with people rating calzaghe highly. but i cant stand the delusional trolls who want to pretend his win against jones meant anything.

all they do is discredit themselves with that nonsense.

He fought everyone that was available to fight, smw was deserted when he was there so its not his fault the names arent that pretty,
he ruled the division for a long time and no one could touch him at his weight
He is an atg because of his dominance

Is best wins are an over-rated Lacey and a solid Kessler. He had a lot of miss opportunities to become an ATG. The B-Hop and Jones fights were to late and strictly to get paid, they were not the best competition available at the time

Was Brian Nielson an all time great heavyweight when he was 48-0? Pretty much similar resumes and I can promise no one is touting Nielson as great.

Very true. I don't understand how people ignore how good Hopkins was at the time. And, while Joe was younger, he was still quite old in boxing terms.
