How many people here thinks that Mayorga can beat De La Hoya?

I think that it isn't Mayos power that is the main issue its the weird angles that he throws punches from, thats why his opponents would get hurt cause they never would expect him to throw punches from the weird angles that he does. I think that Mayo is trying to box more, and is more orthodox than he used to be, I think that may be a factor in his dwindling KO percentage. It also may stem from the fact that his opponents have figured out his style, and are more prepared for his shots.
But in his last fight he put his opponent down several times, and in each instance it was becasue Mayo threw a punch that Piccirillo did not expect.Comment

We all know that Mayorga has good power and that his wild brawling style has foiled good boxers like Vernon Forrest and gave the slick Cory Spinks all he could handle, will that be enough to beat a DLH that hasn't fought in well over a year and is not nearly as hngry as he once was?
I honestly don't know...but I'm not so sure that DLH would walk all over this guy, the way I thought he would. I still lean toward De La Hoya, becasue even on his worst night he is loads better in terms of skill than Ricardo.
Obvioulsy there are other factors that I have already mentioned other than just pure skill but I pose the question...

Mayorga has a chance
Everyone talks about the spinks loss. Mayorga actually would have won the fight except for the points he lost. Mayorga will make any fighter look bad with his style. But now that he has judah as his trainer he might try to change but doubt it. Judah said in an interview he was trying to work on his defense. If De La Hoya actually train like back in the day and focus on the fight instead of Golden Boy he has a chance but its not going to be an easy fight for either one of them. De La Hoya has been rich to long and isn't as hungry as before. And Mayorga has Don King as his promoter, he should have never fought Tito. I'd like for mayorga to win, but I don't think De La Hoya can do what Tito did.Comment

Originally posted by marvdavegood points..I tend to agree. My initial thought was that Mayorga is made to order for Oscar. I still lean towards Oscar..but I'm not as convinced as I was before
I have made several observations of his recent actions in and out of the ring which support my thoughts on his decreasing interest in the sport and increased interest in the money.
1. He seemed to be taking his career serioulsy prior to the second meeting with Mosely. I think that he wanted to cap his career with a W over his rival and maybe step aside. He didn't win and subsequently complained about the desiscion, like a whiny baby.
2. After his plans were spoiled, he became more involved in his promotional company.
3. He decides to test the waters at middleweight, and fights felix sturm, he showed up outta shape and had a rough night with Mr. Sturm. He got the victory but did not deserve it.
4. Its at this point were my conspiracy theory comes into effect. I believe that at some point either before the Sturm fight or after he cut a deal with Bernard Hopkins for a major fight AND a opprtnity to join his promotional company, a deal which won't be revealed until after the Hopkins fight.
5. He meets Bernard Hopkins in Sept. of 2004, and gives a good account of himself throught the first 8 rounds, however it is becoming clearer that B-hop is begining to walk DLH down. Now between rounds, B-Hop says to his trainer, "This, is my round, this is my round", or something to that effect, saying it as if he already knew it. Watch the fight again and it will shock you to hear him say it. As predicted, he knocks out DLH with a shot to the body that wouldn't have put me down.
6. After the fight, he and Bernard, announce that they will go into business together, joining Mosley and Barrera. An interview with Hopkins just after the writer Pedro Fernandez reveals alot. "We couldn't announce the deal before the fight, that would look su****ious."
7. DLH hasn't fought since, and despite the fact that his last 2 fights were at middleweight, hes getting a shot at a junior middleweight champ. He'll get money and a paper title, so when he is truly done with his career, he can say "see I went onto win another word title."
Bottom line is I think that at this point DLH is fooling is fans and is only after money. Nothin wrong with that, but too true fight fans, like myself, that doesn't sit well.Comment

I think DLH-Mayo will look alot like DLH-Gatti, except that it will go longer and Mayo will be nearly helpless by the time he quits or is stopped by the ref or his corner. I just don't see Mayo being able to do anything with the height and reach disadvantage on top of DLH's fast hands. Just my opinion.Comment
