My political stance is I don't mind being part of the UK however I hate the fact that some Oxford educated English toff can decide laws and taxes in my country when he has never even visited it. I would happy to remain part of the union but let us have full political control to decide taxes/laws etc.

Would you rather a Belgian or German make these laws for you?

You make it sound like England, Wales & Scotland all have the same laws, services, policies etc. There are individual governments in each of the countries that comprise Britain, although ultimately the big decisions go through the ones in London.

I would say that most English don't think of themselves as British firstly. As for myself, I'm a Londoner. That's above English, British and so on. Even though I live in the States at the moment I am, and always will be, a Londoner first & foremost.

I'm also a Celt. And I follow the London Irish Rugby team

I'm British when it suits me.

But that's not what this thread is about (evolved into). In America, especially California, people think that British = English & Scots are Scots, Welsh are Welsh & Irish are Irish but geographically we are all British having come from the British Isles. Politically is another matter &, seeing as I don't give a monkeys about politics, doesn't affect me.

I do agree that the sectarians are idiots whether pro British or anti. Get over that outdated 70's & 80's mentality.

Have never fully understood if Puerto Rico counts as part of the US or not, so I can sympathise with those who are a little unsure on what's part of Britain and what isn't.

Oh, I know. I've never known anyone from Scotland or Ireland to refer to themselves as British. That's where I think the Brit/English assumption stems from.

That's very true, actually. And I always forget where Ireland factors in myself. (I think people from Northern Ireland are British, but say that to a Catholic in Northern Ireland and they'd want to take out your kneecaps).

It is quite complicated in a sense.

I recently listened to a bit of the commentary track to the Fantastic Four movie (**** knows why, someone lent me the ****er) and the fit Mexican one said to the Welsh guy who plays Mr. Fantastic "you tried lots of different accents before you settled on doing American, didn't you? I remember you used your own (Welsh) accent, then you tried a British accent." He didn't turn round and say "*****, my own accent IS a British accent."

But a lot of this "Brit's neva fite in da state's" stuff is exaggerated... it's just that your average NSB Fat Yank hasn't heard of many UK fighters. (Plus they seem to forget that they're forced to fight in a completely different time zone)

The English are the only ones happy to call themselves Brits for the most part maybe not people in Cornwall.

The other country are the Celtic nations. Apart from the protestants in NI who are big on preserving the union.
