he's beyond the "testing" stage in terms of finding out what he has. he's been boxing long enough to know what he's got. he's in his mid 30's. the opportunity to fight world class opposition has been there. the man will not leave germany. just look at the guys he has been fighting. look at the guys his opponents have been fighting. it's all european level competition. if you brought these opponents that sturm's contenders have been building their records on to the states they'd probably never win a fight. hell, his contenders would have a hard time winning a fight. sturm was stopped on the european level, in a fight i admittedly have not seen (and am glancing at as we speak.) i haven't seen plenty of sturm's fights, because his career has been such a joke. i dont put them on my calendar. if i catch the stream, i catch it. the guy had trouble against matt macklin. his fight against sebastian friggin sylvestre was considered a step up ( )

like you said, the man has been a "world champion" for years, and has many defenses. there are ATGs with less title fights and defenses. surely you dont think he's that good

caught a few rounds of the fight in which sturm was stopped

ref was a bit quick on the trigger, but sturm looked pretty much dead to rights and you cant complain about the stoppage.

he was boxing well and turning the corner on a mediocre opponent, and looked to tire out. he was trying to bore his way in by the end, when he should have been boxing from at least a middle distance, which is a sure sign that he was tiring.

he's a decent athlete and what i'd call a "solid" boxer, but he's not going to put together 10 + defenses of anything if he's going against world class opposition consistently.

i thoguht macklin, dazzling darren, and dzinziruk all stepped up their game to championship challenger level when they fought martinez, and did put on a good show, even if they dont have the talent. barker gave him lots of problems with his height and guard.

still, martinez rep as one of the top fighters in the world comes from fights in which he stepped up beyond the level at which sturm has been fighting, to williams and pavlik.

i also think martinez is slowing and has become overrated a touch of late, but he's still the man and one of my favorites in the game right now.

Dizzy was always great, but the Martinez fight wasn't even close. I can't say he stepped up to Championship level at all. If anything, I feel like Martinez took it up 3 notches. The others rised to the occasion.

dzinziruk went out on his shield like the other two, and that was what i was mostly getting at. he tried his best and came up way short.

i was actually at that fight. it looked a bit closer live than it does when i watch it on the TV. martinez looked a bit gassed in the middle stages, before his pedigree showed and he kicked it up a notch. he was probably taking the rounds off, but i'd have to ask him to know for sure
