The posts in this thread make me happy, people being supportive of the fighter and not the people leeching off of his name.
I wouldn't go so far as to say he is a joke but he is incredibly overrated in my eyes. If you look at Pacquiao he'd be where he is now without Freddie Roach in his corner, as you said before he was a Champion before Roach and the things that bothered his best wins on his resume wasn't the things he learnt under roach it was his athleticism, power, speed and wildness. He'd have been a success under any trainer worth his salt.
I think because of the De La Hoya fight and the HBO 24/7 series Freddie Roach is receiving undue praise. You have people speaking as though Pacquiao's fight with De La Hoya made him when he had done enough to be in the hall of fame before all of that.
When Pac was with Murad Muhammad he had a promoter who truly believed in him and was genuinely happy for Pac, if you saw the way he would run in the ring and hug Manny after his wins the guy took a bit of money off the side with Mannys filipino manager, but what Promoter doesn't take a bit more? Arum is worse he has taken millions more an hides behind his law degree so he can justify it.
Murad would put Pacman in against tough guys right off the bat, he was the guy who really believed in Pac, you know why? Because he scouted him and said this kid has talent to be great, Roach never believed he only got lucky when he finally realized Pac was legit after he KO ledwaba on two weeks notice, Ledwaba was a tough big dog and pac KO him like he was candy.
Murad wanted Pac to fight the three mexicans right off the bat, in old interviews Roach didn't like that, he said he would like Pac to have a few fights first at 126 before Barrera, Roach was also nervous before the Oscar fight.
Imagine Mayweather Sr. with Pacquiao? Mayweather Sr. would have had Oscar and Manny, it would have been him being trainer of the year and making millions, and he would have improved Mannys defense. Roach is really overrated and he knows it thats why he thanks Pacman every chance he gets cause he knows if Pac never walked in those doors he wouldn't be where he is at now.
Roach gets way too much credit for all of this bull****. Guy was almost a nobody until along comes Pac. Pac is basically the same fighter he was when Roach got him. All he has done is gotten bigger and uses his right a little more. But hell any trainer could have taught him that? Why does Roach get so much credit honestly?
-Linares came to Roach and has lost what, 2-3 times since?
-Khan came to Roach and has lost twice and still fights exactly the same.
-Kayode looks like a no talent gorilla in the ring and has not improved one bit.
-JCC Jr. is on steroids and still sucks.
-Pac as I said is the same fighter and has probably been on roids as well.
Where does Roach factor in as some bad to the bone trainer? He teaches people to just jump in and throw flurries of punches and jump out? Cmon. Also where has US Mens Olympic boxing gone since he has been the advisor? Down the ****ing toilet is where its gone lol. Roach wins these awards and gets all these accolades simply because the ****ing world worships Pac and because hes got Parkinsons, plain and simple. I say it like it is, period.
this is really interesting... i used to believe in roach, but now he's just plain overrated and pac doesn't need him... how i wish it would've been sr at his side, and may have taught pac some inside fighting and defense he'll never have with roach...
roach talks alot of BS nowadays and look where he's headed..
it was pac's hunger to be great, athleticism, heart, gift of power and speed that brought him where he is right now, any trainer could've taught what roach has taught packy...
during the PAC-JMM III, roach didnt have any strategy for manny to hang on to, it was buboy who did the talking.. all he said was " we need to knock this guy out" LOL
"Pacquiao made Freddie Roach. Freddie Roach did not make Pacquiao." - Lenny de Jesus
This is absolutely true.
I don't think that's 100% true. to be honest, most of the people in this place don't know anything about boxing. They see someone like Pac and think to themselves that anyone could have helped him.
It takes more than just boxing knowledge to be a good trainer, you have to be good at relaying the information to the fighter. It takes a good teacher, with patience and understanding.
There are tons of ex-fighters and trainers that know about boxing but can't teach the sport is because they have no patience.
I think Roach is a very good trainer, first off because he was taught by Eddie Futch who was a legendary trainer. Yes Pac made his career but it's not like Roach is a bumbling idiot who doesn't know what he's doing. Pac isn't his only champion. He trained Virgil Hill and was asked to train Oscar, Toney and many other big named fighters. He knows what he is doing.
99% of the "Pacquiao story" we have heard is fabricated bullshit that has been perpetuated by the oligarchy over there. Dude is legitimately a national hero and he still associates with the most sketchy people in the country.
