Yeah, he's burned a lot of bridges with the network, his promoter, and most especially his own fanbase.

For Abril, he was actually two pounds over the limit, then came back two pounds HEAVIER when "attempting" to make weight on his second attempt.

The Herrera fight was scrapped (and never rescheduled) due to injury less than a month before the fight. I'll stop short of saying I don't believe it. I will say that a lot of Left Coast writers are on record saying he didn't look like a guy who was training for a 140 lb. fight.

As for Guzman being in line for a title shot despite past woes and recent modest competition... that's not necessarily the industry. That's the flaws of the sanctioning bodies. But he's always had problems getting fights, even while he was with Golden Boy. The only fights he got were against guys nobody else really jumped at the chance to face
Just look at these pics and tell me he didn't try:

Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas - The weights are in for Saturday night's HBO pay-per-view. In a battle for the vacant WBA lightweight championship, interim beltholder Richard Abril (17-2-1, 8KOs) came in at 135-pounds. Former champion Brandon Rios (29-0-1, 22KOs) weighed in at 137, two-pounds over the lightweight limit. He came back later to weigh-in a second time at 137. Rios struggled to make weight for his last fight in December against John Murray and initially planned to move up to 140 before agreeing to this fight.

Meanwhile Guzman weighs in 9lbs heavy, and taunts his twig opponent after showing off superior power

But when your career and popularity/drawing power sort of depends on you making weight, trying isn't going to cut it you have to make weight.

The same face that Guzman is making on the screen. Is the same face that his promotors made when he didn't make the weight for a fight. He did it to himself he has nobody to blame but himself.

There will always be people for and against. Joan deserved, at some point, all the negativity thrown at him. But, honestly, it's about time people started cutting him some slack. A lot of worse things have happened in boxing than a talented boxer not making weight, like Pacquiao's loss to Phony Bradley, or Money's "win" over Ortíz, to name a couple. Those things weaken just as much, or even more, the image of the sport. But, for some uncanny reason, Joan appears to be one of those athletes who, regardless of talent or the things they do to redeem themselves, the followers of the sport simply prefer to hang him. He seems to have that kind of aura around him, a magnet of hatred. Well, yes, he has a lot to do with that magnetism, but he is not entirely guilty. So, why not just let the man be! If he has shown something other than his problems, it is that he is a boxer who is willing to entertain the public. He goes in to fight and to challenge and to showboat and to offer a spectacle, both of his abilities and of his persona. This ****iness works for some athletes, yet it is a flaw, imperdonable, for others. No one knows whether or not it will work for them. Obviously, it does not work for Joan. But it does not matter, in the end, because it is his style and it has worked well for him, like it or not. I have no doubt in my heart Joan will win a third world title. I only wish he did it against some decent opposition. It would soften the path, hopefully, for him and open doors for some money fights. At the end of the day, two or three money fights is what he needs to retire in peace. To the haters (and the Puerto Ricans who hate) Danny García is brave and has power, but he still has some way to go before he can defeat Joan. He may not know it, but his managers certainly do. I respect their decision if they choose not fight this man, Joan is seriously a danger for anyone.

At least, someone knows about Boxing and personal lost. Many people think that Guzman deliberately missed weight! try doing anything in your life while knowing a family member close to you passed away and see if you can concentrate. I can relate to Guzman when I was in my first year of law school I lost a close relative and I had to withdraw so before most of you go out calling Guzman a unprofessional boxer due to weight issues be in his shoes just for one round and you will be KO!!!!!!!
