Mike Tyson didn't make it. He was a monster as an amateur, knocking people out even more easily than he did as a pro. If you KO other fighters at will, you ought to make the Olympic squad, no? Apparently, "Iron" Mike couldn't take out Olympic caliber fighters inside three rounds.

Guys like Vasyl Lomachenko make me care a whole lot about Olympic boxing. He'll be a professional star some day soon. Ironically enough, his style is reminiscent of Mike Tyson. I’m going to watch Vasyl evolve from Olympic champion to professional world champion. It’s gonna happen…and it’ll be a pleasure to watch it unfold.
    Very good post!

ahhhhh, so THAT's obviously the reason why there's 20,000 people going through the doors of the ExCel arena EVERY SINGLE DAY just for the Olympic boxing, and paying a fair old price for the tickets too i might add.

              dumb ****.

Well even if it does not directly translate to professional boxing, it still does display what the fighters are capable of.

not to me, from what ive seen, very few of these guys in the final rounds would have what it takes to be meaningful pros. i mean seriously, the olympic boxing system is crap. ppl can dress it up however they like, defend it or whatever, but its crap. idc whoat country doesnt medal or w/e. but any tourney where the winner is a crap shoot based off what the judges want to happen not base on what actually happens is crap

If they started scoring it in a better way I think the casual boxing fan would be a bit more interested.

Pernell Whitaker has been quoted as saying that his olympic gold medal was the greatest achievement in his life, and trumped anything he accomplished as a pro. But feel free to tell him otherwise I guess?

I'm not really a big fan of amateur boxing but I have been watching the olympics and while it obviously has its flaws (scoring and rules etc) there have been some very high level skills on display, and I've found it refreshing to watch compared to the "same old" vibe I tend to get from the pro game sometimes.
