Khan vs Garcia to be for The RING Championship

The junior welterweight fight between Amir Khan and Danny Garcia on Saturday in Las Vegas will be for THE RING championship, the Editorial Board has announced.

Khan and Garcia also will fight for Garcia’s WBC belt and the vacant WBA title, which Khan lost to Lamont Peterson in December, when they meet at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on HBO.

Khan and Garcia are rated Nos. 1 and 2 at 140 pounds after Peterson, formerly No. 1, was removed from the ratings because he tested positive for synthetic testosterone before a scheduled rematch with Khan.

Khan and Garcia had been rated Nos. 2 and 3.

“THE RING Editorial Board believes that Khan and Garcia deserve to fight for the championship in light of Peterson’s positive test,” said Michael Rosenthal, Editor of THE RING Magazine.

Garcia (23-0, 14 knockouts) won the WBC title by outpointing Erik Morales on March 24 in Houston. The 24-year-old slugger is from Philadelphia.

Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) won the WBA title when he outpointed Andreas Kotelnik in 2009 and added the IBF belt by stopping Zab Judah in five rounds last year. The Briton lost both titles to Peterson by a split decision.

The WBA title was declared vacant after Peterson’s positive test. The IBF title remains in limbo.

Makes sense I guess, but I still hate their revised policy from two months ago.

That's Golden Boy's play. Garcia shouldn't be considered #2. The whole thing is becoming a joke.

Hahaha what a joke. The Ring has failed miserably in its attempt to render the other sanctioning bodies trivial. Ring Mag is worthless.

                Yes!

Khan was ranked number one since BEFORE the peterson fight, it was only that bull**** loss that changed that.

Eh, who cares. Hopefully we get to see Lucas Matthyse fight the winner.

Wow, didn't realize he was ranked so high. He got lucky as hell that he kind of got there by default because others guy lost some matches and some others left the division. I think Ring punishes fighters too much for losing seeing how a guy like Garcia gets to be ahead of Maidana and Matthyse by just beating Eric Morales.

The same sort of thing happened to Vanes.
