I am a Ward fan, but I'm not biased. Dawson is a tremendous talent and could make it very difficult, with his hand speed. BUT, Dawson, IMO, is mistaken for a "pure" boxer, when to me that's not the case. I think he's an offensively gifted guy, with good technique, with some bad defensive issues.
Even in Dawson's wins, he seems to be very vulnerable to getting hit with jabs and right hands. I'd say Dawson has a slight advantage in hand speed, but Ward has the advantage in terms of footwork and foot speed, and has a very big advantage on the inside. Dawson, while he has impressive hand speed, strangely enough, he has very slow feet when compared to his hands, and that's why he struggles with guys who have good footwork and foot speed. And I have a feeling Ward's taken notice to that, and will utilize a lot of movement in the fight. It's like he freezes when he has someone moving in front of him.
I think Ward is going to fight a similar fight as he did with Kessler, start out moving quickly, finding the range for his jab, is going to offset Dawson by using angles, movement, and jumping in with combinations. I think Dawson will make it very competitive early on, but I think Ward's overall versatility and inside game will tell the story down the stretch and Ward will pull out a 116-112 kind of victory.
Either way, though. Both of them deserve tremendous credit for risking so much. Dawson, has a lot less to lose though, given the fact his titles aren't on the line, which I think had a lot to do with the reason he was so psyched to come down to '68, whereas Ward's ranking, and all of his titles are on the line. Either way, both should be commended for signing this fight so quickly and putting so much on the line, and you have two elite talents facing each-other at the highest echelons of the sport.
