I don't know the best but one great counterpuncher that I know is Joe Louis...
He had beautiful boxing skills...
The most complete heavyweight ever in combination of boxing skill and punching prowess. Threw every punch with textbook accuracy, possessed great speed and paralyzing power. One of the greatest combination punchers and counter-punchers ever. Not only that, but he possessed a FINE jab.

Joe Louis is my favorite fighter EVER, he's there with Thomas Hearns and "Sugar" Ray Robinson...
The 3 greatest fighters from Detroit, but that's not why I like them...
When I get some $$$ I'm going to go order a BUNCH of boxing fights from the internet, I want some more Louis fights(his career maybe), Pepp, Robinson, Gans, Gavilan, etc.
Hey, who do you think would win?
Ali or Louis?
I think Louis exposes Ali unorthodox style with his accurate punching skill, I got Louis by decision, or possible late TKO..

I like your list.
I have many favorite fighters that I respect but my favorite that come to mind are Hagler, Hearns, Monzon, Whitaker, and Gans. These guys were fcking brilliant fighters.
Ali and Louis would be a tough fight to call to be honest with you. Say all you want, but nobody, I mean NOBODY ever had the concussive power in his fists that Joe Louis had. If you ever get the chance to see film clips of his fight with Tony Galento in I believe 1939 then do so. Watch him rebound after a flash knockdown and totally cut the ring right out from under Galento and then just demolish him with the shortest crispest punches you've ever seen. The man is the number 1 all time heavyweight in my book.
Ali and Robinson alike both idolised him (when Ali wasn't playing to the camera's).
Joe Louis was a peoples champion. Great fighter, but even more importantly was a great MAN.

That's cool, man.
The reason I want to get more fights on DVD is to learn more about the past fighters, I agree with you about Louis having the most power..
I'd have to say he was the best PUNCHER in the history of the sport..
I'm currently reading his biography, about 1/3 through it..
Finished Sugar Rays not to long ago, have you read his??
