There's only footage of the Herman and Nelson fights, but from that alone I can see that Gans is as skilled as anything I've seen.

He wasn't the best but Evander Holyfield deserves a mention, his counter right hand was sensational. Just ask Buster Douglas and Rid**** Bowe in the 11th round of their 2nd fight!

It's sad that Ray Robinson is so widely regarded as 'the best ever' from guys who have never seen him fight and done no research whatsoever. You can make a very strong case for Joe Gans, Joe Walcott, Sam Langford and Henry Armstrong, just like you can make a strong case for Robinson too.

              Fair point.

I have him #1 at lightweight ever and #3 p4p when you're talking about the greats.

Who was #2 and #3 respectively on the all-time lightweight charts.

Pernell surely deserves a top 3 wouldn't you agree?

Robinson is generally perceived to be the better fighter because more footage of him is around.

I wouldn't agree, as I'd have Whitaker no higher than eighth on a Lightweight ranking...Leonard, Duran, Gans, Armstrong, Williams, Canzoneri, and Ortiz, all come before him, in my opinion.

I still believe boxing fans take Pernell's skills for granted. The fluid movement, the angles, the way he paralyses opponents to the floor, the sense of anticipation, the domination of the ring. He was matched by NO ONE other then the great Willie Pep.

I think I'm the only one that truly respects what Pernell has done. The respect for Whitaker is only undermined by the American press and boxing fans alike because of Pea's attitude towards them.
