I still believe boxing fans take Pernell's skills for granted. The fluid movement, the angles, the way he paralyses opponents to the floor, the sense of anticipation, the domination of the ring. He was matched by NO ONE other then the great Willie Pep.
I think I'm the only one that truly respects what Pernell has done. The respect for Whitaker is only undermined by the American press and boxing fans alike because of Pea's attitude towards them.
Whitaker was a fantastic fighter and everything you say it's true, it's just that Joe Gans and Benny Leonard were so much better!
Whitaker avoided punches on the backfoot, but Roberto Duran avoided punches on the frontfoot which required twice as much skill.

It was a mass of hidden intangibles that made Pernell so great. The fact that He had so many shortcomings (shaky chin, little to no power). People forget his deficiencies and his flaws that could have made his career resemble a Michael Nunn or even a Breland.
I also like the fact that He won everything on his own terms. He would never bow down to public pressure and brawl. Whitaker simply worked to his strengths and I admired that.
I don't know who is the BEST, though one that immediately comes to mind is Juan Manuel Marquez. To get off the canvas 3 times in 1st round and COUNTER PUNCH your way to a draw, nearly victory, is enough in my book to be great.
