Lem: Cotto Eyes Pacquiao, Mayweather, Chavez Jr.

Cotto eyes Pacquiao, Mayweather or Chavez Jr.

    by Lem Satterfield
    Jun 16th, 2012

Three-division titlewinner Miguel Cotto would be open to rematches with eight-division titlewiner Manny Pacquiao or five-division, eight beltwinner Floyd Mayweather Jr., or if not, a clash with WBC middleweight beltholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., according to his advisor, Gaby Penagaricano.

Cotto (37-3, 30 knockouts) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs), who added the WBC junior middleweight belt to the WBC welterweight crown he already owned last month.

Cotto had scored three straight stoppage victories since being dethroned as WBO welterweight beltholder by 12th-round knockout against Pacquiao in November of 2010, including December's 10th-round stoppage of Antonio Margarito to avenge the first loss of his career.

Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KOs) was dethroned as WBO welterweight beltholder by controversial split-decision against Tim Bradley (29-0, 12 KOs) on June 9, ending Pacquiao's 15-bout winning streak that includes eight stoppages.

There is a rematch clause that permits Pacquiao to face Bradley yet again on Nov. 10, but Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has indicated that Pacquiao might seek a fourth bout with Juan Manuel Marquez on that date.

Chavez (45-0-1, 31 KOs) will defend his crown against southpaw challenger Andy Lee (28-1, 20 KOs) at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday night on HBO.

"There have been no talks with anyone. I know that things are going to start moving after this weekend's fight, and after the aftermath of the Pacquiao fight. Things are going to start moving later this month and then in July," said Penagaricano of Cotto, who caused Mayweather some tense moments and left him with a nose that bled from the fourth round on.

"I think there are interesting fights out there for Miguel, starting with a rematch with either Pacquiao or Mayweather. The first fights were very good, so I would assume that everyone would like to see a second one."

    Would Cotto fight Chavez?

"If Chavez goes up in weight, of course not. But if he stays, it might be and it is an interesting fight," said Penagaricano. "But there's not much going on right now. As I said, I think things will start shaping up after the Chavez fight."

Mayweather, meanwhile, began serving an 87-day jail sentence on June 1 for a domestic violence case.

Cotto lost to all the top dogs in the sport...

I don't think anyone would care for a Floyd-Cotto rematch, as Floyd won convincingly.

You have a little more interest in a Cotto-Pacquiao rematch but only if it's at 154.

I'm interested in Cotto preserving his scenses, as a prime time boxer he's done! If he needs money shame on him but I have a feeling he's ok in that department. Every fighter weither popular or unheard of has the right time to get out and Cotto's is now. Seems like a nice kid, ride off before you take worse abuse and at his age now recover is slower or nonexsisting! Ray

His record is a typo. Why the fucc would he want to fight Chavez Jr. 4 years ago?
