I wrote this sometime ago, but thought I would post it on here because of an thread asking why Hamed quit after Barrera.
Just watching the Hamed Calvo fight again, it was Hamed's comeback fight, coming off his first and only lost to Barrera, Hamed was dominant in the fight winning by a landslide, fighting against a guy who has never been stopped and I don't think had ever been down.
Instead of the crowd and media supporting him he got booed and criticed for not being exciting enough.
In this fight Naz was throwing more jabs and single shots then tried to get away, he adopted a more safety first attitude. This could be a better style to facing Barrera or the other great featherweights around at this time, but no crowd didn't like and he was criticised for not showing enough of his old flamboyant skills and throwing outrageous combinations.
Hamed outclass Calvo and put on better performance than Hatton in his comeback fight, yet Hatton had great support from the public and the press and Hamed was not as nearly as outclassed against Barrera as Hatton was against Mayweather. Yet Hamed was booed throughout the fight and Hatton Cheered despite a poor performance.
I think Hamed set very high standard for himself to live up to and when he got old and slowed and had to change his style a bit, ignorant fight fans and the media couldn't not wait for him to fall and pounced on it and even a good performance against a tough opponent was not good enough.
If Hamed would have the support Hatton has had he would not have quit the game so young and could have gone on to great things.
Now Hamed was a much more exciting fighter than Hatton yet Hatton was far more popular here in the UK. Mayweather is even more ****y and arrogant than Hamed and now where as exciting even at superfeater and even Hamed in the Calvo fight put on more of a show than Mayweather vs Baldomir/ODLH yet Mayweather never gets booed by US fight fans.
It because of the UK public Hamed quit after the Calvo fight, if he were an American he would have supported by the American fight fans and would have not have quit.
Can anyone think of any other British fighter treated so bad after coming of a loss in there comeback fight?
