From the info I've seen out there not much leads me to believe he was faking it.

Not even the fact that he was driving to the press conference to announce he withdrawal?

What would the point be of withdrawing from super6 when you already fought the toughest fighters in it?

Sauerland probably wanted to control more titles. They wanted Kessler to pull out, vacate his belt so AA could fight for it and then go after Bute's belt. What's the point of staying in the tourney only to lose to Ward again in the final?

May be true, may not be true.
The chances of him bailing on the tourney faking an injury compared to Dirrell is not even comparable. And hence the "hate" towards Dirrell and not Kessler.
