Resume always count on top though. Ability is always only perceived. Without resume to back it up, ability is simply too shaky to rank someone on with any certainty.

We've all seen too many fighters with what looks like genuinely ATG ability go to **** against another great fighter. Against ok fighters and decent champs they look like the GOAT, but against the best they are missing something. Only resume tells us that a fighter has everything.

No matter what, someone with a greater resume always ranks above someone else with a decent resume but supposedly greater skills. The person with the better resume proved his skill against better fighters. That matters above all else. This is also why Floyds worst fans rank him as the GOAT. Because they are delusional and dont get the purpose of resume. They rank their fighter based on perceieved ability alone.

This is what iv been trying to explain the longest.

Nobody is denying floyd's greatness. Floyd is a great fighter, just a huge difference as to how great he is.

It's clearly Floyd and people in this thread have that old time fighter syndrome,floyd has beat more champions,has won more title fights,has beat more future hall of famers,has more titles,conquered more divisions beating real title holders,floyd ranks higher than pernel lno matter how you look at it

And since when is Pernell Whitaker an old time fighter? The guy's era was the 90's for crying out loud.

Whitaker has beaten certified ATG's in or close to their prime.

Floyd Mayweather has arguably not even beat HOF'er in their prime.

If your backwards basis for Mayweather being greater than Whitaker is "He beat more Champions and won more Title fights" then there's a long list of fighters who you must also feel are greater than him.

Joe Calzaghe beat more HOF's than Whitaker according to your logic, he also had more title fights, more belts.

Is he greater? Obviously not.

It's not that simple.

Whitaker clearly has a better resume than Mayweather.

He didn't venture any further at 135.

But, it's one weight class. It's nothing.

Nelson was in his prime and he's an ATG. It's obviously a great win.

Marquez is an ATG, a good win for Mayweather IMO. But obviously he's not at an ideal weight and not in his prime either.

But, I do personally consider that a good win. After what happened with Pacquaio.

But, it's still obviously not as good as beating Nelson in his prime.
