No, it's not a joke. It's what people do when they realize they're boxed in a corner. I think it's called projecting. You hate on a fighter so when facts are presented that dismantle a certain point you're trying to make, you flip it around and accuse everyone of "loving" said fighter too much. That's one of many deflection tactics.
