Because of their resume will use Floyd and Sugar Ray Leonard as comparators.
    SRL-Hearns, Duran, Benitez, Hagler.
Mayweather- Castillo, Coralles, Hernandez, De La Hoya.

Two of those fighters were passed their prime, none of them are in the same ball park as the heads on SRL resume.

Ability wise you can present arguments for the present day fighters but the previous greats have been tested more stringently.

People tend to favor boxers the same age as themselves because those fighters were in their prime when they were in their prime.I've been a boxing fan since 1960. I go by what I see with my own eyes or on film. It helps when comparing old timers with newer fighters to see films of both within minutes or hours of each other rather than relying on memory alone. Some things I miss are 15 round tittle fights and big fights on free tv every weekend. Top fighters fighting 4 or 5 times a year. Same day weigh ins, a much better system. One champ in each weight class. I think the best of today's fighter like Mayweather, Pacquiao and Marquez among others are of simular quality to the best fighters of the past. Who would win when it's prime against prime is a matter of opinion.Boxing is more world wide now with good fighters coming from Russia, Eastern Europe, Africa, almost anywhere.

It may be that except for Leonard, they didn't look for hidden advantages before they signed to fight the top guys. They were more dedicated to boxing as a sport and wanting to prove they're the best. The most meaningless phrase in boxing nowadays is "he has nothing left to prove" so he should retire.

Today's boxer more than ever, is running a business, for... to make money. And the more successful he is (no matter whom he fights) the more money he makes. So why should he retire when his business is doing well?? A good example is the klitschko brothers.

          Just think about it.

The fools who say or write this, in the next few seconds, are fully capable of saying.."it's all about money" not realising that they're contradicting themselves..

            Consider who they fought.

A win over a Prime Foreman is far more impressive than any single win of any of those recent fighters you just named have.

That's only the start for Ali. I don't need to touch on Leonard.

Hagler and Hearns aren't that far on the ATG rankings from Roy Jones, Mayweather and Pacquiao, in my opinion.

Only a couple of belts around back then. They had to fight the best.

I stopped a guy in his tracks the other day when he said the guys of today would totally expose the ATG's of yesteryear...I seriously wanted to rip out his eyes and piss on his brain.

It was one of those...are you trying skull fuck me moments..

Back then there were way more fighters, so the competition were more stacked at each division.

I think u can sum it up with just one example - the two outsatnding guys of their time/divisions Ray Robinson and jake lamotta fought eachother six times ... today the two outstanding guys - pac and Floyd have fought eachother precisely 0 times.

It is easier to protect a fighter today from certain styles and challenges. Also now a fighter wants to move up in weight they can buy a vacant title.
