Comments Thread For: Lennox Lewis Staying Put: The Pugilist Specialist at Rest

By Thomas Gerbasi - It was the cruelest of April Fool’s Day jokes, but oh, it was a good one.

“I've enjoyed retirement but there is unfinished business at hand & 125 million reasons 2 finish. Sept 29th #LLVK2 #DoneDeal”

The tweet came from the account of one Lennox Claudius Lewis, the 46-year old former heavyweight champion and International Boxing Hall of Fame member. And for a moment, before realizing the date, boxing fans and media thought that a rematch of Lewis’ final pro bout in 2003 against current heavyweight titleholder Vitali Klitschko was about to become a reality. Even those close to Lewis began to prepare for September.

“It’s funny because the reaction from even some of my friends was like ‘we’re ready to go back to war,’ and ‘if this is my decision, they’re with me,’” laughed Lewis in a chat with BoxingScene earlier this week. “I played with them for a minute, but when I let them know, they just started laughing. They said ‘aw man, you never change. You’re always a practical joker.’ I think that’s one of the things people don’t realize about me, that I am a practical joker.” [Click Here To Read More]

Pretty good article, for those who can be bothered to read it.

I like his idea of bringing out a DVD of his fights with a running commentary from the man himself. I don't think that's ever been done before, and it'd be something to see.

It was pretty obviously a windup, but a lot of people bought it!

When I'm bored, I watch a Lennox Lewis fight.

I used to find him dreary but watching him...he has an aura of success and of genius about him.

It also helps that he fought in one of the greatest Heavyweight era's of all time.

I love the Klitschko Brothers but it is like what Lennox says...they have a totally different mindset.

I still think Lennox Lewis could beat alot of today's fighters.

I missed that April Fools day joke lol.

Perhaps one day, the boxing world may appreciate the Klitschko's when they've gone...maybe.

Lewis and Holmes are well respected nowadays. I think alot of fans will look back on the brothers and respect them somewhat.

Gerbasi, I'm disappointed in your long-winded peroration. I wish you'd asked Lewis why he took part in that set-up, you know, the McCall "return". You know as well as I do that it stunk, that McCall was a psychiatric sanitorium outpatient, and that King dragged him out of there only about 4 weeks before the fight. By the second round the medications had worn off and he was becoming a zombie. That year he'd been hospitalized 3 times for long periods and was half crazy. You know all this and yet you write such nauseating glop.

By coincidence I watched that "fight" just this morning.

Also, Lewis is no gentleman. Any educated Englishman, who hears him speak could tell you he's a lower class Londoner with the average educational background.

It should be obvious that he wouldn't come near the inside of a ring whilst Klitschko is still chugging along. And he's 46. And who'd pay him $125 millions, perhaps a guarantee of $25 at most, but he'd already turned that amount down when he retired the morning of the day he was to have been stripped. It's no secret, although uninformed fans might not be aware. He was no coward, but verrrry cautious.......

And now he's telling us that he's a secret comedian......He's becoming more like Haye every time he opens his mouth.

You owe us all an apology. Me anyway.
