Speaker urges Pacquiao to quietly settle tax issue*By Paolo Romero*(The Philippine Star) Updated March 29, 2012 12:00 AM*Comments (18)*MANILA, Philippines - Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. advised yesterday world boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to quietly settle his tax disputes with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) instead of raising an outcry in public.Belmonte suggested that Pacquiao just face the issue by addressing the concerns of the BIR with the help of his own accountants and lawyers.“Congressman Pacquiao should talk to BIR, preferably with his accountant. That’s the better way to settle the issue,” the House leader said.House Majority Leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali Gonzales II said Pacquiao’s allegations that he was being harassed by the BIR were “unsubstantiated and unfounded.”“There no basis to cry harassment,” Gonzales said, adding, “to further connect it to the impeachment is hitting below the belt.”Pacquiao said the alleged harassment against him started when he refused to sign the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona. As this developed, Pacquiao’s close friend, YACAP party-list Rep. Carol Jane Lopez, said the lawmaker would not be affected by his tax woes in his scheduled fight with the unbeaten Timothy Bradley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on June 9 in Las Vegas.Pacquiao earlier complained that he lost product endorsements abroad because he was portrayed as a tax evader, a charge he strongly denies.InsensitiveSan Juan Rep. Joseph Victor Ejercito, on the other hand, took up the cudgels for Pacquiao, saying the BIR should go slow on his colleague, who is preparing for an upcoming fight in the United States. He said the bureau was being “insensitive” to Pacquiao and that its tax probe was a “distraction” to the boxing champion.“BIR’s duty (to collect taxes) is given; Manny is not taking that personally. What only bothers him is how his case is being handled. Because BIR officials coming out to speak to the media is apparently becoming an attack on his personality rather than what they say it is a fulfillment of duty,” he said.“For example, in news reports, some government officials may not be blatantly labeling Pacman as a tax evader. But if you read between the lines, it’s all the same,” he added.“And given Pacquiao’s rock star status, the media picks up almost every news item that relates with the boxing champ so easily,” Ejercito said.He said it is unfortunate that news of the BIR’s tax investigation came out at a time when the Sarangani congressman was preparing for a fight.“Is this how the government repays him with the victories he has brought to our country, by harassing him in public to pay his taxes?” he asked. He pointed out that he is not asking for special treatment for his beleaguered colleague.“Manny is only asking for consideration, that the government listen to his side of the story. Because after all, he is also a public official,” he said.Pacquiao was formerly BIR’s poster boy for faithful tax obligation compliance. That was when he was paying about P100 million in annual income taxes. But the bureau has noted that the boxing champion’s tax payment has drastically dwindled to P7 million, prompting it to ask for his income records, including those relating to his winnings and product endorsements.BIR officials claimed Pacquiao has refused to present such documents. They denied that they are harassing the Sarangani congressman. On Tuesday, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima defended his agency that he said was just doing its job.“I don’t think the BIR will dare harass an eight-time world champion. I believe the BIR is just doing its job. No one is exempted from being investigated by the BIR. Even me, they ask for my files. We love Mr. Pacquiao and we respect him and wish him the best. But at the same time, we have a duty to make sure that we review everyone’s income tax return. And I don’t think Congressman Pacquiao should take this personally,” he said.He said the boxing champion has nothing to worry about if he has paid all his taxes.“I think what the BIR is doing is to ask for documents because that’s part of the audit of any taxpayer. They are asking for the documents of taxes paid in the US and then the amount of taxes and revenue (earnings) from the Philippines so that they can determine what taxes are due (if any). There is no harassment,” Purisima said.He urged Pacquiao to finally comply with the BIR’s request for the presentation of his tax and income records.–*With Jess Diaz

Well looks like Gayfeather Mayflower isn't the only one with tax issues.

It is really political in nature. Pac already answered that he was taxed in the US as he declared it there. The double taxation rule applies. Anyhow, this article describe in a nutshell the political storm brewing in our country.

Pac is probably next in the list. But first, they must discredit pac else they will bear the brunt of the adoring masses. Pac is easily the most popular guy here.

The same song and dance when accused as a PED user. Manny needs to sue them all; fuck it, take everybody to court.

I wonder how the obsessed fans are going to spin this; "It's not his fault! That country is corrupt!"

Oh wait.. isn't he..? Never mind.

That's what he gets for getting into politics and surrounding himself with irresponsible idiots. When will these high profile athletes realize that they're not above the law? Same goes for celebrities and politicians. Whoever Pac hired to take care of reporting his expenses has an agenda. OR there could be expenses that Pac doesn't want to report that may be extremely personal and could be really bad for him. OR this can be all just a simple fix that's getting more negative publicity than it deserves.

Whatever the reason may be, you can never feel bad for wealthy people that are irresponsible when it comes to their finances - especially when we, the fans, contributed to their wealth. Plain and simple.
