I think it's actually the other way around, putting smart pressure like Macklin did today. Even Macklin admitted that putting relentless pressure against Martinez was impossible because Sergio is a very good counter puncher.

I think you might be mistaking relentless pressure for reckless pressure. You have to pressure Martinez, but of course you can't do it recklessly because whoever does that will end up like Williams.

Martinez is garbage.

Two things:

First, Martinez won this fight solely on conditioning alone. Macklin gassed out.

Second, McGirt took a SHlTTY fighter like Macklin and he was ahead up to the 10th. He had a very good chance to win if he didn't gas.

If Macklin would have kept on jabbing and would have thrown the left hook like McGirt was begging him to, it would have ended very differently.

Once Macklin gassed, he got sloppy and went on survival mode.

Side note:

What's interesting is that the HBO telecast was basically saying that Martinez looked like warm horse SHlT and didn't look like he deserved to be ranked as highly. In round 11 once Macklin was completely gassed, they began softening their criticisms and once McGirt stopped it, they praised Martinez as an incredible champion.

Props to McGirt for shaping Macklin into a contender that was close to unseating the so-called P4P#3. McGirt needs to bring in a better conditioning coach and his efforts would have produced better fruit.

Any fighter who can adjust to rally for the KO is a good solid fighter. A lot of casuals in boxing nowadays. They think think all fighters with no name should not put up a fight against fighters with name and regard because if so, then the fighter with name and regard is overrated. Martinez stopped the guy,just like he stopped the last guy after adjusting. Sergio Martinez is one of the best and I think he gives Floyd problems because he can adjust AND Pac would not last 5 rounds with him. Put Martinez against anyone at 154 and 160 and Martinez wins all day. Just cause a fighter has a lil trouble during a fight don't make him a bum. This is boxing and opponents are supposed to try and win. At least Barker and Macklin put up more a fight than Clottey/Mosley against Pac. These so called boxing fans need to be watching Basket Ball wives.

Lederman is a blind fool and merchant is an idiot. How did anyone have Macklin winning more than 3 rounds of that fight? Are you kidding me? Just because Sergio maybe overlooked him a little but and it took him a few more rounds to settle in, he hit Macklin with jabs, lefts almost at will. Sure Macklin landed a few shots, but so? Also that was a leg sweep with a push punch, that was no knockdown cmon lol. Oh well, it is St. Patty's Day and everyone was hyping up the Irishmans performance, thats fine lol. This judging as of late is abhorrent too, I am getting sick of these terrible judges with ridiculous scores. Julie Lederman had it a draw, with 2 knockdowns by Sergio? Unreal.
