Seems like the other shoe has fallen....

I was afraid Gamboa was waiting too long to address this situation publicly. That brief statement he issued early last week was nowhere near enough. There's a reason why Hershman hasn't said anything until now; he was waiting to see how things unfolded. But he wasn't going to wait long.

Yuri appears to have been getting bad advice from the start. With this recent episode, Gamboa should've stayed visible. He's been MIA. That spells U-N-R-E-L-I-A-B-L-E...and that's poison. Business executives like Hershman don't have time for that kind of nonsense. There's serious money at stake, reputations to protect and responsibilities to observe.

I feel the damage has been done. But Gamboa better show his face if he hopes to salvage anything at all....

Who authored such a disagreeable text? I bet we never see anything and some people on Boxing Scene will keep passing bs as gospel about this "pitiful" contract.
My sense all along has been that the problem Yuri has is mainly with Ahmet Oner and Arena Box, his co-promoter. It appears that Oner snaked in a contract extension Gamboa is unhappy with. Promotional shenanigans are nothing new to the sport, and Oner is a known sleazeball, so there's a good chance Yuri has a legit beef. Unfortunately for Gamboa, he's compounded his mistakes by balking at this fight. Yuri has been getting terrible advice....

Gamboa can't salvage anything by showing his face. He is and forever will be known as a coward now. I don't care what he's b1tching about, dude was about to get the biggest payday of his career, and the best exposure of his career as well there is no excuse for what he has done.

Gamboa needs to be banned from HBO.

You might be right about everything else, but I disagree with the bold. I don't think too many people above adolescent stage truly believe Gamboa is afraid of Rios. Even if the thought crosses your mind, it's clear that taking a few shots from Brandon would be far more preferable to the legal and career damage Yuri is exposing himself to.

I don't see any other reason why Gamboa would pull out of the fight. Even if the speculation is true, that he was being screwed over by Oner and Top Rank, this fight with Rios was his ultimate opportunity to gain the biggest payday of his career, as well as more fan support, which would have then FORCED his handlers to give him what is rightfully his whatever that may be...

You just don't agree to something and then as the date draws nearer you decide to disagree. That just isn't supposed to happen.

doesnt make a difference. gamboa is the one that has to get in the ring and get hit. he is looking out for himself as all fighters should. this is a deadly sport and the fighter needs to be compensated the right way or all off them should renegotiate. toprank has been stealing money for years. pacquiao should be making way more than he does.

It's a real shame that Gamboa took this route. It is going to cost him dearly. His credibility with the networks is shot. He's lucky if he even gets offered a fight on ESPN Friday Night Fights making peanuts. And of course forget about fighting a big name. I think he's going to be on the shelf for a while unless he has better luck attracting a fight in the European market. However, they might be leary too!

i have no idea what gamboa was thinking of when he challenged rios,i think he really is afraid, rios throws a lot of punches from all angles and hard punches at that and just keeps coming in order for gamboa to win he would have to box him to perfection and to me gamboa isnt that fighter,he leaves himself wide open, doesn't go to the body enough or hardly does and goes down too, featherweights have dropped him, rios is a lightweight with power,i can see gamboa maybe winning the first 3 or 4 rounds but then rios shots would start to wear him down and eventually ko him, gamboa i think know this and thats why he decided to not take the fight, after all he's 30,not that young anymore and a loss here wouldn't be that good,it's better he stays at featherweight or go to jr lightweight but stay away from rios, and i think it was really a bad move too because hbo or whoever had already started everything,i think they should ban him from hbo and make it clear no fighter should behave this way, gamboa is good but not great and a move to 130 and broner will blow him out
