Thats not totally accurate. If he signed a letter of intent, or an agreement in principle, then whether or not he actually signed the bout contract is irrelevant. (unless of course the bout agreement contained a material change from the agreement in principle)This is going to get ugly!!! TR can't legally make Gamboa responsible for any loss w/o a signed contract. (and I do understand is common practice to start promotions w/o signed contracts) On the other hand, Gamboa and his team don't want to burn bridges with Top Rank, Vegas and specially HBO. This will be fatal for his career. I'm pretty sure when they got the physical contract and the lawyer got involved there was a clause or clauses that team Gamboa didn't really like. IMHO is a multi-years extension w/ TR!!! Too bad I was hyped for this fight...It very unusual that Bob Arum is so quite, hmmmm!!!
And Top Rank going ahead with the show regardless of Gamboa's participation (new opponent) means they will be able to sue Gamboa for damages if he in fact pulls out. Had they cancelled the whole event, their cancellation insurance would have paid out, and thus they would not have had any actual damages to sue Gamboa for.......Last edited by OnePunch; 03-08-2012, 12:22 AM.Comment

The first paragraph sounds about right. It's possible that Gamboa contends something was added to, or modified from, the initial deal. As unlikely as it may sound, such shenanigans in boxing wouldn't be so surprising.Thats not totally accurate. The second paragraph I have no idea about. It seems very interesting. Thanks for sharing your insight.Comment

This won't get resolved anytime soon. Rios only wants to fight DeMarco at 135 but DeMarco is tied up. Marquez won't come in at the last minute. Alvarado at 140?
So who is Rios going to fight? I say the fight gets cancelled. The fight is close.Comment

Something needs to get done quick. Either settle with Gamboa or find a new opponent to keep the integrity of the show. Rios vs a no hoper on HBO would be very dissapointing. And people with tickets need to know if they need to cancel hotels, refund flight money, and refund tickets or keep them for the new show. Someone needs to get on the ball and do it now.Comment

Uncle Bob must be seething. Beat red. Drawing up plans with all his lawyer buddies to get Gamboa and Floyd and Haymon.
TR doesn't play around when it comes to lawyers and contracts. Look at Donaire. When he came back to TR, he was licking the balls of TR brass. That was punishment for him trying to leave. Those lawyers are going to get real deep in Gamboa's hole. Too bad. this fight should've just happenedComment

You're absolutely right. It sucks...regardless of what's really going on, the show might've already suffered too much damage. But the damage might be limited if the parties patch things up pronto....Something needs to get done quick. Either settle with Gamboa or find a new opponent to keep the integrity of the show. Exactly now if they do go through with the bout and Gamboa loses, people will say he was distracted and didn't have a good camp. I don't think he would lose to Rios either way, but it's an issue that shouldn't be happening.Comment

Throughout all this I've wondered: Is Gamboa being given sound advice? Or is Yuri ignoring sound advice? Somebody's right and somebody's wrong. Like most people here, I tend to believe that Top Rank has their shop in order; but nobody's perfect....Uncle Bob must be seething. Beat red. Drawing up plans with all his lawyer buddies to get Gamboa and Floyd and Haymon.

Both men have been training throughout (although Brandon had to take a couple of days off for the press conferences). The fight is still five weeks away. I don't think what's happening now will be a factor in prep. If the fight comes off, this fiasco might actually prove beneficial. There might be some extra motivation for the fighters to perform. Rios will want to pound Gamboa. Yuri will want to "stick it" to his current promoters. Let's keep our fingers crossed....Comment
