I'm not sure what good fighting Marlon Hayes does for Wilder.
Hayes has never fought at heavyweight. He's 5'9", coming up to his 41st birthday and has been retired nearly 5 years. He was KOed at middleweight by Kingsley Ikeke ten years ago.
Hayes had lost 8 of his past 9 fights before retiring in 2007.
Wilder, Mitchell, Perez, Scott, and Boytsov need to up the level of opposition this year. I think Boytsov is close though, I just want to see him in with a Chisora, Helenius, or something like that.
Vitali should fight Povetkin, that's what I want to see next in August.
yeah i don't know why he isn't facing better comp. i was at the fights last night and he said he was trying to get some rounds in. wilder could've knocked dude out if he wanted to but he just didn't for some reason. that said, he's a really nice guy, sat a couple seats away from him when broner/perez was going down. seth mitchell was there too. i think eventually he'll be talked within the top guys at the HW division. for now, klitschkos reign supreme until they retire.
After 21 fights, Wilder needs to start fighting decent journeymen like Guinn, Walker, Rossy, Barrett, Grant, Pajkic, Firtha, Gavern, etc.
Deontay's not yet fought anyone even on the level of Vinny Maddalone.
I hear they are trying to get Golden Johnson, who retired around the same time as Marlon Hayes, to be the 6'7" Wilder's next opponent.
The bottom line, which you won't actually come out and say, is that you want to see Wilder lose.
So the sooner he takes tougher fights, the more likely he will get beat. So that's what you are going to demand from him.
Bottom line is that anyone who watches the kid can see he has great potential but is still very raw. The number of fights he has is irrelevant because there have been very few rounds between them. He takes fights like these for the sole reason that he needs every round he can get. Furthermore, it's not like Wilder is the only Heavyweight prospect who refuses to step up.
I agree the competition needs to be better than Marlon Hayes, but it doesn;t need to be someone like Pajkic either at this point.
I also think that if I were his manager or his advisor and being paid to run his career in the way that I best saw fit I would have him take about 10 more fights like this over the next year and a half before he really steps up.
People **** on Chavez Jr. for fighting 37 bums or whatever before he stepped up. Bottom line, it worked for him. He woulda stepped up 10 fights ago he would have gotten killed.
People **** on Ward and his team for not getting him enough fights and saying they were bringing him along too slow. Now he is one of the p4p top fighters in the game.
There is no right or wrong way to bring a fighter along. You have to be able to look at what his best for him and be confident of that plan regardless of the outside pressure.
Ultimately Wilder's team will continue to take their time. You will continue to rip him for it as well plenty others. He will step up when he is ready and then we will find out what he is made of. This nonsense of measuring fighters by the number of fights means nothing to the people who are responsible for his career.
